Then it will never have the function of seeing. If it is said that the mind sees due to the power of the aggregation of eye and form, light, space, and attention, then (the answer is): "It is not seeing, it is an aggregation, because it has no substance, like that forest." This shows that the mind is not seeing, because the aggregation has no substance, just like the aggregation of forests, etc. If the mind does not depend on the eye, etc., but sees alone, then if it is truly existent, why is there no seeing of the mind without aggregation? Therefore, apart from imputation, it is not possible to impute the function of seeing to anything. The aggregation also has no substance, just like forests, etc., therefore, like the mind, it should not be considered that the self is seeing. If there is no self, who sees? We believe that in name, it is the mind that sees. If the mind is momentary, therefore it is not the agent, then (the answer is): "The agent is also possible, because of the accomplishment of other dharmas, like a bell." This shows that even if other non-Buddhist schools have thoroughly investigated the non-self, the momentariness of the mind can also be the agent in name, because the internal and external aggregates are without self-nature, and due to the power of the definite aggregation of their respective causes and conditions, other dharmas can manifest and be accomplished, for example, a bell makes a sound, a lamp continues to burn, and water flows. Therefore, we admit that seeing arises from aggregation in name, but in ultimate truth, it does not reside anywhere. As it is said: "It is not in the eye and form, nor is it in the space between the two, where does it transform, it is neither existent nor non-existent," and so on. Some people think that the light of the eye goes towards the object and grasps it, in order to refute this view, (the text) says: "The eye does not possess light, because it is a sense organ, like other sense organs." This shows that the eye should not possess light, because it is a sense organ, just like other sense organs. Just as the ear can hear sounds that are far away, the mind can also know objects that are a thousand yojanas away.
