Therefore, regarding the meaning of the phrase "Since consciousness is unreal and unborn, like skin, etc.," why should one view consciousness as non-existent? Because it is unborn, even the eye cannot see it; this is a concluding statement. In the Abhidharma, the eye faculty is like a sesame flower or a water bubble, united with the object of color and form. This is a description of its nature, and we also accept it as such in conventional truth. However, in ultimate truth, the eye faculty is not united with the object of color and form, because it is produced. With these reasons, the example is like skin, etc. To refute its object of color, there is the following verse: "The eye is not the object of form, because it does not grasp its own form, like the ear and other senses, because it has form, like iron, etc." This means that the eye is not the object of form. "That which has an object of form is called the object of form." The eye is not the object of form because it does not grasp its own form, like the ear faculty, etc., or because it has form, like iron, etc. Form can be temporarily divided into one's own form and another's form, and that is all. Among these, it is obvious that the eye does not see its own form. As for another's form, like being obscured by mountains and walls, the dharma on this shore, in the middle, or on the other shore, blocking one side of a city, etc., seeing it is merely a designation of "this sees." Merely a designated seeing is not reliable in the investigation of ultimate truth. Therefore, the Blessed One also said: "The eye does not see form, the mind does not understand the nature of dharma, that which the world does not enter, that is the ultimate truth." Here, the Samkhya and Vaisheshika schools say that the act of seeing is expressed by "this sees," therefore the act of seeing is seen by the eye, the seer. For example, when saying "the axe cuts," it is not only the axe that cuts. So how is it? The tool is the axe that cuts, the cutter is the person, and the thing cut is the tree. Similarly, it is not only the person who sees, oh.

Then what is it like? Is it that the agent, the eye, the seer, sees the object to be seen, the form? For these reasons, it is said: Thus the seer is without eyes, And is not seen because there is no analogy. This statement, just as it prevents seeing with the eyes, should also prevent the seer from seeing. How so? Here, if the seer is inferred from seeing form, then seeing form also exists when the eye, form, space, light, and attention are gathered together. Therefore, just as Devadatta is called a seer only when gathered together, otherwise it is like a pot without eyes. For example, there is no analogy of seeing even with eyes, so it is not reasonable to see. Is that eyeless seer also one of the natures of the seer? For example, the Samkhya school says: Having consciousness is the nature of purusha (puruṣa, पुरुष, पुरुष, person), who is the complete seer, and so on. Or is it not the nature of the seer? For example, the Vaisheshika school says: Having consciousness is only mind, and purusha (puruṣa, पुरुष, पुरुष, person) is like space, pervading everything without mind, and it is only by combining with mind that it sees. If so, if the seer is the nature, then the nature does not depend on others, and even without eyes, it can see. If, like a woodcutter without an ax, he cannot complete the woodcutting, but only by not leaving the ax can the woodcutter complete the woodcutting, similarly, can the seer of seeing see without leaving seeing? Therefore, it is said that there is no seeing before meeting the agent and after leaving the agent. If it is the nature of seeing, How can one see form? Because it is not the nature of the seer, there is no ability to see, just as a blind person has no seeing. Because it is not the nature of seeing, How can one see form? Furthermore, is the seer the same person, or are the hearer, the smeller, the taster, the toucher, and the knower also the same person, or are they different? If they are different, then there will be many selves.
