However, just like leprosy and so on, it is said to be a non-sentient thing, and so on. Similarly, like swollen glands and so on, at first they swell into small lumps, later they become larger, and on other days they become even larger, so this reason of "because it will grow" is uncertain. Because it will grow, is it a sentient thing like a cow, or is it a non-sentient thing like a swollen gland? It's like that. Similarly, it is said that in the seasons of autumn, summer, and spring, bile, wind, and phlegm will arise, and because they are able to arise, are they non-sentient things like bile, wind, and phlegm? Or are they sentient things like horses? Therefore, it is uncertain. If Buddhists believe that trees have no mind, then from where do these arise? Why are some harmful and some beneficial, like sentient beings? Why do they grow at the right time? To that, it is said: "By the power of sentient beings' karma, roots arise and grow in time. Hell and heaven are like weapons and wish-fulfilling trees." This means that the entire vessel world arises entirely from the karma of sentient beings as the master. In particular, from the evil deeds of hell beings as the master, forests of sword leaves and trees of Shalmali and so on cause cutting, piercing, and walking and so on to occur. From the cause of good deeds in the world of heaven, wish-fulfilling trees give clothes, food, enjoyment, and the wealth of happiness. Similarly, in the human world, thorns and poisonous trees and so on, which are harmful to life, also arise from the sinful karma as the master. Champaka, Ashoka, lotus, Utpala, mango, jackfruit, coconut, and so on, although non-sentient, also give benefit and happiness from the cause of virtuous karma.

It is like this: Like gold, silver, crystal, lapis lazuli, and other precious jewels. The production of these things in a certain period is also produced by karma, in order to be able to enjoy them closely like time. Therefore, these things have no consciousness, and it is not wrong to use them closely. If it is said that all things with consciousness are the same, then eating rice, flour, flowers, fruits, leaves, etc., will also become eating the flesh of sentient beings. Drinking sesame oil, sugarcane juice, etc., will also become drinking the blood flowing from the bodies of sentient beings, so that everyone in the world will commit great sins. In addition, the teaching of "non-harming is the best of Dharma" also appears. Therefore, if one is always engaged in the act of eating and drinking, it will become an act of creating harm, so what Dharma will there be? And how can one be liberated from samsara? Those who want liberation will die if they do not eat, and if they eat, they will harm sentient beings, and the Dharma will decline. Therefore, the idea that trees have consciousness is harming oneself. Moreover, the former teachers said: "Life and warmth and consciousness, And the field of each movement, This Dharma is aimed at where, That place is called livelihood." "Without warmth, there is no movement, And not turning to hearing, etc., Those who have no awareness of sound, etc., It is said that they are not sentient beings." "The deeds of good and non-good, Only arise in those with minds, In those who are said, they are all without, Therefore, trees are all without minds." "Free from desire and free from anger, And the body has no leisure, Liberated from caste and non-caste, Therefore, trees have no mind." "The coming and going of life and opening and closing, And all the affairs outside the body, In those who are said, they are not seen, Therefore, trees have no mind." and so on. The Commentary on the Essence of the Middle Way, the Lamp of Reasoning, the twenty-seventh chapter, which is the last chapter. In order to explain the rebuttal of other speculators, it is said: The three paths are truly meaningful, What Brahma said is like medicine. He who knows the past and the future, He

English

If the teachings are to be established, then the three paths are the subject. The statement "as it is" is its property. Because it is spoken by Brahma, because it is spoken by the capable one who knows the past and future, these two are the reasons. Whatever is spoken by Brahma, or whatever is spoken by the one who knows the past and future, that is as it is, like medicine. This is the example. To that, it is said like this: The reason called Brahma's speech, spoken by the creator etc., because it is proven to be wrong. Therefore, you should determine it like this. Because it is the creator, it is the creator, the creator of the three realms. Those who have the first creator are the creator etc., offerings and killing sentient beings, buying and selling virtues etc. Wrongly observing is because of not understanding. What is spoken by the creator etc., as it is said, I have established with reason. Therefore, what is spoken by the creator etc. is proven to be wrong. Therefore, because it is spoken by Brahma, this reason is uncertain. Just as because it is spoken by Brahma, medicine etc., are these three paths the only truth? Or, like what is spoken by the creator etc., proven to be wrong, is it not as it is? Therefore, it is uncertain. If one says that it is as it is, like what is said in medicine, like what is said by the creator, then it should be said like this: Some see as it is, but not everything is as it is. The words of cowherds and madmen are not all as they are. For those who see the reality, it has the meaning of as it is. Like this kind of reasoning. Brahma is not one who sees the reality, it has been well established before, so some of his words are as they are, and some are not as they are, it should be known. Like the words of cowherds, or the words of madmen etc., some are as they are.
