English

If it is like fire, then it should be stated thus: The so-called "healing" is a dharma of the body that possesses consciousness, because for things without consciousness, this cannot be established, so the meaning of the argument itself cannot be established. Only the change and reversal of elements are manifest here, and those that are also seen as having consciousness, such as wine, ghee, weapons, etc., are uncertain. Similarly, because there is healing, trees cannot be considered to have consciousness, because things like wine that have deteriorated, have reversal, so doubt arises. It is said: Wine, etc., after losing their potency, become potent again through the particularity of combination, or gold, etc., also arise with impurities and become impure, but again through combination become pure and heavy, etc., because there is healing.\ This causes doubt, namely: Because there is healing, is it conscious like humans, etc.? Or, because there is healing, is it without consciousness like the reversal of deteriorated wine? Thus, it cannot be determined whether it has consciousness. Furthermore, in order to more closely refute the previous view, others say: From similarity arises growth and change, because hatred arises at the appropriate time, similarly, because of sleep and madness, I consider it to be like conscious horses, etc. Just as a horse is born from a horse, not a cow. Similarly, from a barley seed arises a barley sprout, not a rice sprout, this is like arising from similarity. Just as horses grow with the differentiation of the states of foal, youth, and old age, so too do trees gradually grow sprouts, saplings, trunks, branches, leaves, flowers, and fruits, this is like growth. Whoever has the thought of harming, that is hatred. Because poisonous trees, etc., destroy life, it should be known that it has hatred. Just as cows and horses, etc., are born in seasons such as spring, and dogs in autumn

Just as sentient beings are born, trees also grow when they have the seasons of spring and summer. Regarding the classification of the life of trees, there is a saying that they grow during sleep or intoxication. Winter is the time of sleep, and summer is the time of intoxication, just like the sleep of gazelles and so on. The answer to this is: coral, lapis lazuli, precious gold sprouts, etc., whether trees have consciousness, like this is uncertain. Things that arise from similarity, such as cutting hair, when hair is cut, it will grow again from the hair itself, but it does not have consciousness. Growth is also like this, such as hair and nails, the edges of nails, and the fruit of winter melon, as well as lapis lazuli, gold sprouts, ant nest soil, coral, etc., these are all examples. All of these will grow, but they do not have consciousness. If it is said that coral also has consciousness, because it arises from a body with consciousness. But it does not have independent consciousness. Precious stones and gold sprouts, etc., grow when the clouds make sounds, which is precisely an example of seasonal growth. Trees do not sleep in winter, but because the fire element weakens and fully matures, the accumulated leaves and fruits become sparse. At that time, the juices within them gradually dry up and disappear. Their own locations and other lands are also dried and scorched by the sunlight, thus gradually growing and flourishing. In summer, because the water is very abundant, they do not dry up, but are intoxicated by the nourishment of themselves and others. Also, if melon seeds and sugarcane sprouts, etc., are cultivated in spring with watery soil, they will also grow, but are they asleep or intoxicated? Furthermore, the idea that shrinking and not growing is sleep is like the ripening of crops such as barley, and medicinal herbs such as motherwort and vasanti, etc.

English

Just as haritaki and others blossom in the spring, the fruits of pippali grow, and the fruits of large sour substances and seed containers, etc., fully ripen in the winter. Similarly, the shoots, branches, leaves, flowers, and fruits of the tree called "contrary to the forest" also ripen at that time, so are some asleep and some not asleep? Also, because they arise from similar things, are they just inanimate things like hair, etc.? Or, do they possess consciousness like horses, etc.? Similarly, because they grow, are they inanimate like coral, etc.? Or, because they grow, are they animate like cows, etc.? Because it is uncertain in this way, it is not established as having consciousness. Furthermore, because these are inanimate, hatred is also not established. The reason is also not established, because coral, etc., are uncertain. If they had consciousness, then sleep and hatred would also arise, but not for those without consciousness. Therefore, the two reasons of hatred and sleep are not established for us others at all. The curling of leaves and the appearance of flowers and fruits are also seen in other inanimate things, such as snow, the moon, the sun, jewels, magnets, and grass, leaves, crystals, fire crystals, contraction and expansion in water, the generation of water and fire, and the movement of iron, etc., which are formed nearby. The other three reasons, such as arising from similar things, are uncertain due to leprosy, etc. For example, leprosy that appears in one part of the body gradually spreads to all parts of the body, and itching produces itching itself. These things that arise from similar things themselves make the reason uncertain. What? Because they arise from similar things, are trees conscious like horses, etc.?
