Therefore, the act of consuming food is the means by which all beings in the world sustain their lives and generate merit. If consuming food were to become unrighteous, then the entire world would be filled with unrighteousness, but that is not the case. Therefore, I do not see that there is sin in the act of consuming food, nor do I see that there is merit in not consuming food, etc. This shows that ascetic practices such as the five fires, etc., are merely tormenting the body, and therefore are not the cause of attaining heavens and liberation, etc. In scriptures such as the Extensive Explanation, there are such contradictions between earlier and later statements, which is not reasonable. Why? "One who travels the path of three nights in one night, or seven nights, or just one day, one who fasts, will go to the heavens." etc. Furthermore, "One should not fast for half a month or a month, because it harms the body, this is not asceticism, nor is it in accordance with Dharma. Some people observe fasting, harming the body, because of the suffering of the inner self, this will not cause them to realize the heavens. The body is always full, the mind and senses are clear, then one will realize the subtle dharmas, not through roughness and depression." Thus it is taught. Similarly, "In winter, dwell in the water, in summer, practice the five fires, in summer, dwell without shelter, the Brahmin who does this practices severe asceticism." After saying this, it is said again, "The Brahmin dwells in the midst of four fires, the fifth is the burning of the sun, that kind of asceticism is not true asceticism. The fire of hunger and attachment, the suffering of anger and desire, whoever overcomes these five, is considered to possess the five fires. Always overcoming desire and anger, possessing happiness, restraining the senses, this is the asceticism of the wise, not the torment of the body. Possessing harmlessness, truthful speech, without anger, tamed and upright, this is the supreme asceticism, not making the body withered. Any asceticism that is of the nature of suffering, suffering leads to more suffering, the nature of wisdom
