Taste and touch, and so on. Some are inferred, just as one infers the existence of fire from smoke. Similarly, by seeing the moon, the sun, and the stars, and so on, one knows that there are higher realms beyond them. By seeing beings with happiness, suffering, lower castes, higher castes, wealth, and poverty, and so on, one knows that things that did not exist before exist. By abandoning attachment to worldly things, one sees that even in this life there are qualities; and by seeing the faults of moths, bees, elephants, and beings with desires who are attached to worldly things, one infers that there are also lower realms, and one should definitely accept it. Similarly, by seeing that the Blessed One's statement that "all conditioned things are impermanent" is true, and by inferring from that, one knows that the heavens and liberation also exist, and therefore what is shown is also true. Therefore, one cannot ascertain things like the heavens and things that did not exist before by relying solely on scriptures that are unrelated to inference. Therefore, if one can ascertain things like the heavens through inference alone, why establish the Vedas? If someone argues to prove that sound is permanent, to refute that argument, it is said: Because it occurs only once. Just as a lamp also occurs only once, the reason is uncertain. Therefore, the permanence of sound is also false. A lamp, in its first intense burning, can see what one wants to see, and does not need to rely on a second burning. Therefore, because it occurs only once, will sound become impermanent like a lamp? Or, because it occurs only once, will it become permanent like sound? This is uncertain. Therefore, the statement that sound is permanent is wrong. Having refuted the inference put forward by others, one puts forward one's own valid cognition: Because it exists, sound is impermanent. Why is it not apprehended like action? Or, like the movement of the body, it disappears because it is the cause of wisdom. Sound is the subject, it is impermanent.

Its nature is Dharma. The statement "because it exists" is the reason, whatever exists is impermanent. For example, actions such as walking and cooking. Or, sound is perishable, because it is an object of consciousness. Whatever is an object of consciousness is perishable, just like the movements of the body such as lifting up, pressing down, stretching and bending. Furthermore, what was previously stated, "knowing after habituation" is also, the reason is that there is no subsequent following. Habituation and subsequent knowing are not constant, because they have never been seen. Even if repeatedly habituated, sound perishes at the moment of utterance. When the consciousness of uttering the first letter ceases, it ceases by leaving the ability in the six sources. After obtaining that ability to fully mature, it manifests the consciousness of uttering the second letter. Similarly, it is so until the matter is completed. Therefore, there is no mutual connection between the letters, and since it is not momentary, how can it be permanent? Each letter has many times such as beginning, middle, and end, and the sense of hearing is momentary, so it is impossible to grasp all the sounds completely. Therefore, if sound itself is difficult to establish for a while, how much more so is the habituation of sound? Subsequent knowing is also, because the previous consciousness has ceased, and the subsequent consciousness arises, there is no connection between the two, so subsequent knowing is also constant. Furthermore, sound itself has not been established as constant. Sound itself is also not an example. The manifestor is also blocked. This is not what language can manifest. If the constancy of sound is established, then sound itself would be constant, but why prove that sound itself is impermanent? Similarly, sound itself is also impermanent. If so, how can it be cited as an example? Because it must be determined that sound is produced by the combination of throat and lips, and the combination of place, action, and effort, so it is unreasonable to say that sound should be manifested. Furthermore, if sound is audible, then language can
