Here, those meanings that are easy to understand and have already been explained will not be elaborated on below for fear of excessive writing. In general, the refutation is shown first, and then the specific refutations of those are shown. Earth is not the nature of hardness, because it is an element, like wind. The function of earth is not holding, because it is made, like water. Having said these and so on. In treatises such as the world and the Abhidharma, the characteristic of earth is hardness itself, and its function is to stabilize. In order to refute these, two kinds of valid cognition are cited. Because there is nothing at all that is separate from water, fire, and wind. It is impossible to separate the characteristic of earth from the nature of the aggregate and explain it separately. The difference in function is also the same, therefore the nature does not exist. When analyzed in this way, even if it does not exist, if one thinks that the substance of earth is hard, it is unreasonable for yogis to rise and sink on it. That is to say, even if the nature does not exist, if one thinks that its characteristic is like that, then it is unreasonable for yogis to rise and sink on the earth like on water. If it is said that through the power of meditation, hardness can be transformed into liquid, then the power of meditation of the meditator, it is unreasonable for earth to become liquid. Why is that? Because the nature is immutable. Or rather, it itself is not hard. Nature refers to that which is unmade and immutable, therefore no one can ever change it. Or rather, if yogis can change the hardness of earth, then how can the statement that its nature is hard be valid? Similarly, water and fire and wind, etc., are not the nature of liquid, etc. From them, gathering and ripening and moving are unreasonable. Water and so on are all produced from the cause of the four great elements. Because they all have the properties of hardness, liquid, heat, and lightness, it is difficult to determine their own unique characteristics. Function is equally present in all things, but it appears more prominent in some, this is

It is the cause of ignorance. Because those minute particles are also the nature of aggregation, namely the aggregation of eight substances: earth, water, fire, wind, form, smell, taste, and touch. Therefore, by what means can the individual natures and functions be distinguished? It is merely a characteristic, and nothing exists for anything. It is merely a function, and nothing exists for anything. If one truly thinks in this way, even though they are not the nature of arising, if one still thinks that there is a nature, then how can yogis walk on the deep and boundless water as if on land? And when forest fires spread, how can they make it as cool as hailstones and pearls? And how can the winds that shatter the tops of rocks be made immovable by the tips of fingers? Therefore, neither nature nor function exists. Gathering is the act of holding (mantras). Ripening is warmth. Shaking is moving, which is a synonym. Here some say: Those with miraculous powers, by the power of their minds in meditative equipoise, can accomplish going wherever they wish with tangible objects, but not because things do not exist at all. If things do not cause obstruction because they do not exist, then those with miraculous powers rising from meditative equipoise, and other beings cannot remain in their own places, etc., but obstruction is clearly seen, therefore things do not exist at all. If one understands it this way: when yogis rise from meditative equipoise, by the power of their intention, even if things do not exist, they will only cause obstruction to the body, that is not reasonable. Why? Because it is not a characteristic of intention. Just as in darkness, perceiving space as pillars, etc., causes obstruction, and perceiving clear things like crystal as water is also wrong. Here it is said: Intention is also different, and the difference of desire is also completely different. How is it understood? Because the yogi's intention exhausts space, etc., for earth, water, fire, and wind.
