It only appears that way to a solitary yogi who believes that everything is just space, because it doesn't appear to anyone else, and other things don't turn into space itself. With the specialty of intention, the yogi only makes the earth liquid through the power of miraculous abilities; it's not just belief. Because one can pass through walls, fences, mountains, etc. without hindrance; one can also make water solid, walking on water without sinking as if on land; one can also make fire cool, pacifying the burning suffering of hell beings; one can also obstruct the movement of wind, even pressing down on the mandalas of great scattering winds etc. with one finger. With the specialty of intention, sometimes one shows that only oneself is without hindrance, for example, oneself passes through mountains etc. without hindrance while carrying a bowl, Dharma robes, and utensils etc. Sometimes one only shows it to others, for example, giving water etc. to pretas etc. Sometimes one shows it to both oneself and others, for example, pacifying the burning suffering of hell beings etc. If it were merely belief, things wouldn't change, the suffering of fire wouldn't be pacified, and thirst wouldn't be quenched, but that's not the case. Mistaking reflective objects like crystal for water is wrong and cannot be used as an example. In short, even if space etc. become the ultimate essence, earth etc. would not be established as having inherent existence. Some say: 'Earth, water, fire, wind, space, their qualities are superior, sound, touch, form, taste, smell, are their qualities.' To refute this view, it is said: 'Wind etc. in conventional truth, do not desire equal qualities, because they are objects of the body sense, and because they are produced, like earth.' This means that wind etc. in conventional truth, all qualities are also equal, because they are objects of the body sense, and because they are produced, just like earth.

Furthermore, for example, like the earth. It is not space, because it should not be a place of origin. Some qualities are more prominent, while others are more obscure, because they are too subtle to be definitely grasped. Some consider it to be the nature of the aggregation of earth and so on, and also consider it to be only substantially existent. If it is said that no matter how it is crushed into fine particles, the consciousness it possesses still exists, therefore it is substantially existent, then that is not reasonable. For what reason? "Earth and so on are not substantially existent, because without the parts of the aggregate, they do not exist. Whatever is shown as stated, like not seeing a substantially existent forest." This means that earth and so on are not substantially existent, because apart from the parts of the aggregate of water and so on, the term 'earth' cannot be specifically identified. Whatever cannot be grasped without grasping the parts of the aggregate is not substantially existent, like a forest. Just as without grasping trees, sandalwood, and palasha, the term 'forest' cannot be grasped. For the aggregate, the term 'forest' can be applied. Because earth and so on are not substantially existent, therefore the wisdom concerning its object is also not substantially existent, because it has a cause and will perish, like the wisdom of a forest. Therefore, it is said: "The wisdom of the object of earth and so on, is also considered not substantially existent, because it has a cause and will perish, like the wisdom of a forest and so on." Sound is manifested and accomplished from place, action, and effort, therefore, whatever sound speaks of earth and so on, that is, the sound that shows earth and so on. "The sound that shows earth and so on, speech is not considered substantially existent, because it is heard, just as the sounds that show armies and so on are not considered substantially existent." Here, the Vaisheshikas refute, saying that for those things like forests and armies that are not substantially existent, such faults would occur. Because in our words, 'encounter' and other substantially existent things appear, therefore forests and other things are only substantially existent. How so? Here, trees and palasha compose a forest, which is connected with encounter, therefore it will be combined with the trunk of the tree. Trees, palasha, and trunks are also connected with encounter, therefore they will be combined with trees and so on.
