The forms of the aggregates should be examined. To be connected with this. Here, earth and so on, in terms of ultimate meaning, are not the nature of arising, because it has been done, because it has causes, etc., as known. Here, in terms of "here," it refers to the occasion of seeking to understand that itself. What is here? It is said "earth and so on." "Earth" means vast. "Etc." means earth, summarized by the first-mentioned branch of water and other lower ones, which is the meaning of general summary. The word "etc." also includes water, fire, and wind. In "ultimate meaning," "meaning" means to be known, which is a synonym for to be examined and to be understood. "Ultimate" is a word of excellence. "Ultimate meaning" combined means that it is both meaning and ultimate, hence it is ultimate meaning. Or the meaning of ultimate, that is, non-conceptual wisdom is the meaning of ultimate, hence it is the meaning of ultimate. Or in accordance with ultimate meaning, that is, the wisdom that realizes and conforms to ultimate meaning, there is ultimate meaning there, hence it is in accordance with ultimate meaning. "In ultimate meaning" means that in the ultimate meaning itself, it is also ultimate meaning. "Arising" means arising by itself or causing others to arise, hence it is arising. "Nature" means that this arising itself is the nature of earth and so on, hence it is the nature of arising. "Not" is a word indicating negation, connected with "is not." What is not? Earth and so on, in terms of ultimate meaning, are not the nature of arising. Here, the negation of "not" should be understood as negating its absence, not negating its non-existence. What is the difference between negating absence and negating non-existence? Negating non-existence is negating the nature of things, therefore, similar to that, it establishes the nature of things different from that. For example, negating "this is not a Brahmin," thereby establishing a commoner caste similar to that Brahmin, different from that Brahmin, inferior in asceticism and learning, etc. Negating absence merely prevents the nature of things,

And similar, it does not establish other entities. For example, the statement that Brahmins should not drink alcohol only prevents this, and it does not say whether or not to drink other beverages. Therefore, here, the earth and so on, which are conventionally established by worldly people, are not the nature of arising in the ultimate sense, but only negate this. It does not establish that it is another nature, or the nature of non-entities. Here, the statement "earth and so on" is the subject, and the statement "not the nature of arising in the ultimate sense" is its property. The subject and the property together are the thesis, and those who are skilled in reasoning say that it is called the thesis because it clarifies it to others. Here, others refute, saying that in the words of your teacher it says: "O Brahmin, all all" refers to the five aggregates, twelve sense bases, and eighteen elements. Similarly, the characteristic of form is that it is corruptible, and so on. If you also acknowledge this and then deny it, then you are harmed by your own admission. Similarly, the very act of engaging in the ascertainment of individual objects is known to be the direct perception of the senses, and there is no more superior means of valid cognition than seeing. You and your own eyes also see the shapes and forms that arise, and you seek the rough touch of their nature, and all worldly people engage in activities such as grasping, and yet you deny these things, so you are also harmed by direct perception. Similarly, whatever are forms and so on, and whatever are their natures such as hardness, wetness, warmth, and movement, are known even to hermits and outcastes. Thus, by clarifying the nature of things that are known to all the world, you are also harmed by renown. If you say this, then it should be explained that because there is a distinction of being qualified by "in the ultimate sense" or by conditions, there is no harm from admission, direct perception, or renown. Because the Bhagavan taught the two truths, in the conventional truth, he also established the nature and characteristics of phenomena.
