And short and so on, and form and sound and so on. The general characteristic is emptiness due to different kinds. Therefore, after becoming extremely completely certain, the wise should be diligent because the mind is in equanimity. Likewise, in the wisdom arising from hearing, because it is the cause of knowing other than that. How should the mind be placed in equanimity? By mindfulness of exhaling and inhaling. Exhaling and inhaling are exhaling the breath outwards and inhaling the breath inwards. These two should be counted by placing mindfulness near the tip of the nose, counting from the first exhalation from one to ten and so on, and up to a hundred, counting in accordance and not in accordance. Also, mindfulness should be directed to arising and entering, arising is exhaling the breath with a bad smell and long and hot. Entering is inhaling the breath with a fragrant and short and cold smell. From the navel area to the tip of the nose, in this way, mindfulness should be applied from the big toe to the whole body. When one sees that the body is filled like a blacksmith's bellows, at that time one obtains the Dharma gate of knowing each and every part of the body distinctly, and the body and mind also become workable. Some also believe that the Dharma gate arises when exhaling and inhaling stop. Thus, one should be diligent in order to keep the mind in equanimity by these and so on. Likewise, one should also be diligent in the wisdom arising from hearing, which is the nature of being completely familiar with the four sciences of sound, logic, medicine, and inner science, because it is the cause of obtaining the supreme wisdom arising from thinking and meditating other than that. It is shown that one attains that by keeping the mind in equanimity, not by others. As in turbid moving water, the face is not seen. Likewise, the mind is not in equanimity, that itself is obscured by obscurations. Thus it is said, just as in water that is turbid with many particles of dust, moved and shaken by the wind, one who wants to see the image of the face cannot see it, so the mind is scattered in many objects, and with equanimity.

When desire arises, along with aversion, sloth, torpor, excitement, regret, and doubt, these five obscurations prevent one from seeing the true nature of phenomena, even if one wishes to. Therefore, it is said: "The wild elephant of the mind wanders; bind it firmly to the pillar of the object of focus; with the rope of mindfulness, bind it tightly; with the hook of wisdom, gradually subdue it." As previously explained, those who practice calm abiding, the wild elephant of their minds wanders into actions that are not conducive to liberation. By focusing on the firm pillar of objects such as the four immeasurables and other virtuous qualities, bind it tightly with the rope of mindfulness. Gradually subdue it with the hook of wisdom, bit by bit. Similarly, "Excitement, impermanence, etc., pacify through contemplation; weakness, vast objects, cultivation will abandon." This means that if one becomes excited due to pride in lineage, appearance, or youth, one should contemplate impermanence, suffering, emptiness, selflessness, etc., to pacify it. If one becomes too weak, one should cultivate vast objects of focus such as the Sutras to abandon weakness. Thus, the above has shown how a yogi should settle their mind. To show how to gather and uplift the mind, it is said: "Distraction, the sign of distraction, gather by seeing faults; weakness, see diligence, merit, and uplift." This means that if the mind wanders from many objects of focus, unable to settle like a monkey, thereby losing the meaning of the true nature of phenomena, or if it is disturbed by non-humans and becomes distracted, then one should observe the signs of distraction, such as eyes burning like fire, being swept away by water, falling from a cliff, and many other faults, thereby gathering the mind inward. If one becomes too weak and laziness arises, to completely abandon laziness, one should observe the merits of diligence, thereby uplifting the weak mind. To show how to cleanse the mind: "Defiled by the filth of attachment, aversion, and ignorance, the untamed, impure mind, with the water of the impure, loving-kindness, dependent arising."
