If space is completely non-existent, why does your teacher, the Buddha, consider it to be the support of wind? For example, someone asked Gautama, "What does the earth rely on to exist?" and the Brahmin replied that it relies on water. What does water rely on? Water relies on wind. What does wind rely on? Wind relies on space. Isn't that what is said? It is clearly stated in the sutra that when someone asked Gautama what space relies on, the Brahmin vehemently avoided the question, making it difficult to exhaust the root of the problem. If space is formless, invisible, and unobstructed, what does it rely on? However, it is called space because of appearance. Therefore, space is considered to be without substance because it is formless, invisible, unobstructed, and without support. It is merely established based on appearance, so it is merely conventional truth. Therefore, the so-called entity of space does not exist at all. Because this does not correspond to the example of the self, which is constant, all-pervasive, and singular, it is not established for others in this way. Therefore, space is not unobstructed, nor is it a place of designation, because it is said to exist. This reason is also not established. Space is of the nature of being unobstructed, and the place of designation is its result. This is the view of the Vaibhashikas, but that is also non-existent because space does not possess substance. If it is said that space exists because it has the nature of being unobstructed, or because it is the result of the place of designation. Non-existent rabbit horns, etc., do not have the nature of being unobstructed, nor do they have a place of designation. Space has the nature of being unobstructed and the result of the place of designation, so it exists. These reasons stated in this way are not established for others, because I have already admitted that space is merely devoid of substantial entity.

Furthermore, some say that the self, which pervades all permanent things, is like space, which is the basis of all things. To refute this erroneous view further, the teacher said: That which does not arise from a cause, space is not considered a real thing, nor is it one, like a barren woman's son. What is called space is the subject to be established. That it is not a real thing is its property. Because it does not arise from a cause is the reason. A thing that becomes arising is a real thing, a synonym for arising from causes and conditions. Space does not arise from any generating cause, therefore, how can space without a cause be regarded as a real thing? Like a barren woman's son. A barren woman's son is not born from the sperm and blood of parents, etc., just as it does not exist, so is space. Therefore, the so-called it is the only one, pervading everything, etc., are all unreasonable. Also, some say that even if there are differences in vases, etc., there is no difference in the earth itself. To this statement, the answer is as follows: Although the shapes of vases, etc., are different, the category of earth is one, just as earth, etc., are different, so I am not one. Even if it is the same in the category of earth, the differences made by vases and pots, etc., exist, just as on earth, even if this is the only one, it is also changing and will become many shapes. In this way, I am proven not to be the only one. Also, some say: Because I am not known and not understood, like the enjoyment of dreams, arrogance arises. To this statement, will the essence of knowledge produce obvious arrogance, or will the essence of ignorance produce arrogance? To this, the answer is: Intelligence is not inverted, this knowledge should not be arrogant, ignorance is also not inverted, ignorance is not desired to be arrogant. For the time being, if it is the essence of knowledge, like a person with eyes, things are reasonable as they are, so there will be no inversion.

It is so. If one does not understand even one thing, it is like a blind person who knows nothing. If there is no reversal, how can pride arise in manifest enjoyment? And some say this: "Though abiding in the body, not attached, Acting, yet not stained." To those who say such things, because it is unchanging like the sky, likewise because there is no attachment, I should not be the agent, nor should I be the eater. If it were a changing dharma, it would be appropriate to be the agent and the eater, just as pounding rice and the like are always engaged in that activity and are the agent, so that even when the fruit ripens, it becomes very greedy because of attachment to food and the like. Furthermore, those whose essence becomes one in the past and future, and who do not engage in their own activities, those who are not attached to objects, are the agent and the eater, and faith will not arise in the mind for those words. The Commentary on the Essence of the Middle Way, The Blazing Light of Reasoning. Twenty-third fascicle. Furthermore, the agent is me, but not stained, How does one desire the fruit of the agent? Because the ruler is possessed of sin, The example of the king is not reasonable. The mark of the agent being the agent is this: that which is stained by the fruits of virtuous and non-virtuous actions. If there is no enjoyment of the fruit, then all the actions of the agent will become meaningless, and therefore it will not even possess the speaker himself, so it is very difficult to establish the agent himself. The example shown by the king is also unreasonable, because it is stained by sin, and what is to be established and the Dharma are inconsistent. Just as the king also has a share of sin by committing non-virtuous deeds such as killing, taking what is not given, and lying. Because there is fear of falling into hell and the like, this is also teaching to practice in accordance with the Dharma and so on. Furthermore, if this is not stained by sin and the like, then no matter how one acts as one pleases, there will be no contradiction, and if so, then it is not right, therefore the lord of men is also with sin.
