Now, apart from showing the feelings, desires, contacts, samādhi, etc., which arise from the mind, and the faith and so on, which are mental events, even the slightest action of a person cannot be observed. Apart from these, one's own essence is also hardly observable. Therefore, why the establishment of the existence of these is not established itself. It can also be said: I am not truly existent, because there is no nature of action, like a flower in the sky. If it is said here: Only a person can see, hear, smell, taste, think, know, remember, and universally feel. Why? Because knowledge and so on are shown as agents. Because the nature of the scriptures of sound is like this: the agent, the action, the deed, the correct giving, the source, and the nature of what is to be controlled, the predecessor of all these actions is the independent agent, because there is an agent, there are other differences of action. Therefore, a person is an agent, and his eyes and so on are what is done. He is like a person living in a house with many windows, who follows the object that is close to which door. Just as saying "cut with an ax" does not mean that cutting is done by merely saying it, but like "cut with an ax, Lalla cuts", saying "see with the eyes" does not mean that seeing is done only with the eyes, but that agent, the person, is seeing. Similarly, from hearing a sound with the ears, it is the person who hears, not just the ears and so on. In this way, action can be accomplished in this way, that is, "because he sees, it is the eye", "because he hears, it is the ear", until "because he tastes, it is the feeling"? To this it should be said: knowledge and so on are they said to be agents? Is it establishing the agent itself, or is it establishing a different agent from it? Like a cutter.

This is not reasonable. If asked why it is not reasonable, it is because the agent relies on conditions. Since it does not rely on action, therefore this argument is either unestablished or uncertain. The eye sees by itself, not by the action of something else. Hearing is the ear, smelling is the nose, tasting is the tongue, touching is the body, thinking is the mind, fully knowing is consciousness, remembering is memory, and individually knowing is wisdom. Therefore, the meaning of these arguments that show the performance of knowledge and so on is not established. Or, since it also involves inconsistent things, it is uncertain. Only the eye sees, but the agent sees through action, because it shows the performance of knowledge and so on, like saying an axe cuts. When others say this, I will answer: only the eye sees, but not the agent, because it is shown as the agent, like saying Lhasbyin cuts. Therefore, it is said: knowledge and so on are the agent itself, because it is expressed in the words of the agent. Just as Lhasbyin cuts, it is seen as the agent. If Lhasbyin does not cut, but the sword cuts, then this is not reasonable. It is not reasonable because for the self, the agent, the action, and the group, the action will be accomplished here. Sometimes, the agent is shown as the main one, like saying Lhasbyin cuts. Sometimes, the action is shown as the main one, like saying the sword cuts. The act of cutting depends on both, it is impossible without the action of the agent, and it is impossible with the agent without action. Therefore, from the mutual dependence between these two, the showing of the agent and the action is not obtained. Therefore, things are manifestly accomplished from the collection of conditions, and there is nothing that is primary here, otherwise it is just an approximation. Since a person is invisible, he cannot be shown as the agent because he does not belong to the group.

No said: Aggregates of conditioned phenomena are by nature devoid of action. Therefore, they can be called agents, because they can perform actions, just as a lamp can illuminate. The collection of parts of conditioned phenomena, even if they themselves are devoid of action, can still be called agents, because they can perform actions, just as we see a lamp as an agent. Just as a lamp, which is manifestly formed from the factors of oil, wick, vessel, and flame, even if it is devoid of action, can still be called an agent because it illuminates. Similarly, these aggregates of body, speech, and mind, even if they are devoid of action, can still experience being called agents due to the collection of factors of objects, faculties, and consciousness. Here, someone says: The self is the most supreme, because the main agent depends on it, and it participates in all actions. Lamps and so on are merely proximate causes, for example, although a potter needs many factors such as clay, the potter is the real agent. To this, it should be answered: A truly singular lord is not an agent, for how can one cause not make a pot? Therefore, lamps and so on as agents should not be considered mere designations. In conventional truth, the collection of causes is the agent, which can be understood through examination, and it is also said in this way. But in ultimate truth, the lord as the agent cannot be established, because a single cause cannot accomplish a pot. A lump of clay, a stick, a wheel, a rope, water, and the potter's intention, and so on, are many factors that must come together to ultimately accomplish a pot. Similarly, the self alone is not the cause for the accomplishment of all actions and endeavors, because it depends on the collection of many causes. The word "all things" should be added. Lamps and so on, and eyes and so on, are not merely designated agents, so what are they? They are the main cause, because no other main cause can be established. If someone again says: This is in terms of reality itself, so it is momentary...
