Obeisance! Because it arises dependently, like fire from a burning glass. Forms and so forth are objects for consciousness, namely the consciousnesses of the eye and so on. That this is not produced by a maker, a self, is what is to be established. Dependent arising is dependent arising of consciousness; its arising is a dependent arising. Its essence is precisely dependent arising. Therefore, because it is a dependent arising, for example, just as the jewel called a burning glass, being aware of the light of the sun and relying on the proximity of the condition of powdered dry cow dung, even though not made by a maker, produces an unbearable mass of fire and burns grass, trees, and many creepers that grow profusely, and performs actions such as cooking, boiling, and sorting. Similarly, relying on the collection of objects, faculties, consciousnesses, and mental activity, the consciousnesses of the eye and so on, even though not produced by a maker, perform actions such as seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, touching, and mental activity. What need is there to posit a self apart from objects, faculties, and consciousnesses? Furthermore, whatever sound is of the nature of letters, I do not want that to be a maker, because it is to be heard and because it is a sound, like an echo. Whatever sound of the nature of letters arises from place, action, and effort, that which is uttered from the door of the mouth is also not made by a self. Why is that? Because it is to be apprehended by the ear faculty, or because it is a sound, for example, just as the echo that arises near a mountainside or a rocky cave from the sound of a fire burning a forest, or the sound of a forest moved by a great wind, or the roaring of the ocean, or the sound of a great stone moved by a violent mountain stream, is not made by a self. This also refutes other actions of the body, such as coming and going, moving the hands and feet, and the remaining characteristics. Whatever little bit of coming, going, moving the hands and feet, bending and stretching, sitting, and lying down arises correctly from the body

All those actions, etc., are investigated by this very order. How is it? Just as a stream of water flows from the crevices of mountains and rocks, spreading throughout the land and expanding, even if selflessness has been ascertained, one would still say, "The water is coming." Just as when a fire spreads from one place in a vast grassland, one would say, "The fire is coming," similarly, due to the effort caused by intention, the action of lifting and placing the feet, and the aggregates arising from action, such as various sons and the sons of loving mothers, one obtains the expression of "going" and "coming." Furthermore, even if selflessness has been ascertained, the image of a wooden machine with two hands holding a bow and arrow to shoot, and the force of water currents colliding with each other, being rolled up like cotton being spun, and pouring water and rice into a clay pot and stirring it without letting go, causing the rice to cook, these are like rocks, etc. Therefore, the "self" apart from the body and senses does not exist. Because it has been separately determined that from all-knowing, all-knowing comes from memory itself, from individual separate complete knowing, wisdom is felt in experience, from the aggregation of conditions of objects, senses, and consciousness, and attention, concepts arise from the complete discernment of trees, cities, mountains, people, and wild animals, etc., and memory arises from the memory of objects experienced by the six aggregates of consciousness. Wisdom arises from the wisdom that completely and ultimately distinguishes the individual characteristics of phenomena, both their own and common characteristics. Feeling arises from experiencing objects that are pleasant, painful, or neither painful nor pleasant. Apart from concepts, memory, wisdom, and feeling, etc., other actions of the "self" cannot be definitively grasped in their nature, just like a flower in the sky, it does not exist, so it should be grasped. The mind, which has the characteristic of distinguishing the essence of things, and the characteristic of distinguishing the individual differences of things.
