It is heard that those who have attained the teachings, if they pay homage even to animals such as rabbits and goose kings, then what need is there to mention those who have become humans and so on? Furthermore, there are two things that a monk should pay homage to: the Buddha and the elder monk. Among them, there are also two kinds of homage to the Buddha: the qualities of the nature of the accumulation of merit and the realization of the nature of the accumulation of wisdom. The root of both of these is the mind of enlightenment. As stated in the Sutra taught by the Noble Inexhaustible Intellect: The Tathagata's discipline, concentration, wisdom, liberation, the vision of the wisdom of liberation, and so on, as well as generosity and so on, all arise from the root of the mind of enlightenment; therefore, they are inexhaustible. Similarly, the merit of the mind of enlightenment, if it had a form, filling the entire expanse of space, would exceed it. And so on will also appear. Even if one has not realized Suchness, if the mind of enlightenment on which it depends is firm, then one should pay homage. The first direct perception is the forbearance that follows sound. The sixth is conformity. The eighth is called the forbearance of the unborn dharma. The power of direct perception is the inconceivable shaking of hundreds of millions of worlds with magical powers, appearances, departures, dwelling for hundreds of eons, entering the past and future limits, and so on.

Who hates what? That is hating the Three Jewels. Who abandons the Three Jewels? There are no monks and no vows. Most of those who praise Magadha and others also manifestly praise the deeds of the Blessed One's previous lives. The cause of perfect and complete enlightenment, the mind itself is the jewel, and you, hero, know its essence, which is more distant than others. Should I prostrate to you first? Or to whom did you wander in samsara? Knowing the faults for so long, abiding here, I prostrate to the great compassionate one. And so on, and from the practice of remembering the Buddha, it is also said to remember the qualities of the Tathagata's past practices. Past practice is also from the beginning of generating the first mind. The conduct of the Bodhisattva. If remembering the past practice can remember the Tathagata, then prostrating to the Buddha, and not prostrating to the Bodhisattva, how can this be? Moreover, in some Mahayana sutras, Bodhisattvas use respectful words to call the Shravakas "Venerable" and prostrate, and the Shravakas also use the term "son of good family" to talk to them, which is to approach the worldly convention.
