Sa. As the Buddha had previously said to Maudgalyayana's son, Maudgalyayana's son, you should practice the silence of the noble ones. Do not be heedless, etc. In the Sutra of Abiding, it says: Do not be heedless of this abiding of the noble ones. Etc. Those sutras that appear have not been seen either. Sutras such as the Mahaparinirvana Sutra and many other sutras that exist now also appear separately with words from different sutras. Therefore, those sutras and many other sutras, in the Hearer Vehicle, are not widely apparent as spoken by the Buddha now, so it should be known through knowing. Whatever fundamental compilers, such as the great Kashyapa and other arhats, have done, has deteriorated in this way: because in the Vinaya of different schools, the placement of the words of the sutras is different. The differences in those words of the Vinaya, the compilation of the meanings of the words in those compiled sutras, are also because they are proclaimed differently again, and other sutras that are not included and are not contradictory, such as those with names like entering the womb, joyful one, end of life, are seen closely. Thus, the compilers are also being sought, so how can one trust that the Buddha's teachings widely exist for such people? It is heard that what is heard from one transmitted to another also exists up to a hundred. Furthermore, for the Great Vehicle, if it is another scripture, how could it be compiled by different compilers? Because they contradict each other, the compilers are different. Because of this, sutras that have emptiness in the ultimate sense and are endowed with selflessness are not accepted by those who are revered by many noble ones, while the existence of the intermediate state (bardo) of seven existences, etc., is not accepted by the Sarvastivadins, etc. Similarly, in the Vinaya, the actions of the Sthavira Nikaya, etc., are prohibited from eating sugar cane at the wrong time, etc. The actions of the Sarvastivadins appear to be eating and enjoying. The karma of those sutras praises the existence of self. The Sarvastivadins abandon it. Similarly, some say there is no self. Some say there is a person.

Some hold that all conditioned phenomena are momentary. Some hold that there are two moments. Some hold that it lasts until the end of the kalpa. Some hold that nirvana exists as a substance. Some hold that it is merely a name. Some hold that there is an intermediate existence. Others do not hold this. Some hold that the Bhagavan's (Sanskrit: Bhagavat) realization is a single moment. Others hold that it is sixteen moments. In this way, as before, because of contradictions, the scriptures of different schools have become diverse, so even the scriptures themselves are difficult to ascertain for a while. Because they are compiled in different ways, the Mahayana is the Buddha's teaching. Furthermore, some believe that the Tathagata is exactly like realization, and there is nothing else besides that. Because realization is permanent, it is said that the Tathagata is permanent, but not unchanging. If you want to know more specifically, you should consult the Lankavatara Sutra. The continuous following, even the nature of momentary destruction, is called permanence. For example, a river always flows, and a fire always burns. In this way, it does not contradict the statement that "all conditioned phenomena are impermanent." The so-called Tathagata is pervasive means that the knowledge of wisdom pervades without remainder, but it is not the case that it exists everywhere like Vishnu. The so-called having the essence of the Tathagata is also because emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, etc., exist in the minds of all sentient beings, but it is not like an inner agent, a permanent and all-pervasive person. As it is said in the sutras: "All dharmas are the nature of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness. What is emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness? It is the Tathagata." and so on. The consciousness of grasping is also the cause of entering and returning from samsara, flowing like the current of a great river. Although it seems to enter, it actually enters with a momentary continuum, not like a self, so it does not contradict the seal of the dharma of no-self. Buddha
