Thus it is declared. Truly, the path of the Great Vehicle does not achieve Buddhahood and enlightenment, it is neither with conceptualization nor with characteristics, like the path of worldly people. Because of having conceptualizations and characteristics, such as thinking that this world and the next exist, the path is not the cause of enlightenment, but like the path of virtuous actions that lead to the realms of gods and humans. If practicing the path is for the purpose of exhausting afflictions, then when it becomes untrue, how can it exhaust afflictions? Like experiencing a tree stump as a person, doing so does not eliminate doubt, this is stating the thoughts of others. Thus, a path that is not as it is cannot exhaust afflictions, because it is not true. Like mistaking a tree stump for a person, because one cannot get rid of this mistaken perception, this is stating one's own thoughts. As long as someone, out of fear, mistakes a rope for a snake, recognizing that it is a coiled vine is the knowledge of the opposing side. Due to misidentification, at first the rope is thought to be a snake, and it is not known to be a rope. Then, for the same thing, it is thought that this is a coiled vine, not a rope, nor is it something that does not exist. Like this, by recognizing that the coiled vine is not real, one can counteract the error of mistaking it for a snake. Similarly, for form and so on, at first due to misidentification, attachment arises from bad views and bad thoughts. Then, when one realizes that these things themselves are illusions, the opposing view of right view and so on arises, thereby recognizing that neither of these is truly existent. Not seeing is the truth, because there is nothing other than the nature of non-existence. As it is said in the Sutra of the Tathagatagarbha: 'Light Protector, for example, a person is tormented by the poison of untrue doubt, saying I have eaten poison, I have eaten poison, crying out, beating his chest. At this time, a doctor skilled in medicine, using a method that seems to be able to expel the poison, causes that person's concept of the poison of doubt to be eliminated, thereby freeing him from suffering.'
