Furthermore, as requested by the venerable Light Protector, (the Buddha) said: 'Even though one knows that all phenomena are unborn, one still trusts in the ripening of karma; even though one understands that all phenomena are without self, one still generates great compassion for all sentient beings; even though one gives vast generosity, one does not hope for its ripening; even though one acts in the three realms, one's mind is still in nirvana.' Thus it was proclaimed. In terms of ultimate truth, it is not nihilism. For example, just as killing a person with a name, or smashing a vase with a hammer, or burning wood with fire, things are not established as ultimately real. If one were to assert that, then one would be a nihilist. The nature of phenomena, whether a Buddha appears in the world or not, is primordially free from birth. As the teacher Chandrakirti said: 'Cessation and freedom from disintegration is nirvana, cessation and emptiness is peace, suchness is also the inherent nature of all phenomena, thus it is taught.' Thus it was proclaimed. Showing unbornness is for the sake of those who grasp at things as real. Phenomena are primordially unborn, unbornness is merely a superimposed term. If non-existence itself is not established, then what existence is there? Existence is primordially non-existent, so to speak of annihilation is not reasonable. We do not have the stain of nihilism. The teacher said: 'If there is an acceptance of things as real, then there will be fears such as annihilation, etc. For those who do not accept things as real, how can fears such as annihilation arise?' If there were something real, then the world would have an end and be endless, etc. Thus it is said in between. For example, if someone were to say: 'Space does not exist, the utpala (Sanskrit: utpala, 梵文天城体:उत्पल, Sanskrit Romanization: utpala, 汉语字面意思:青莲花) and lotus of space do not exist.' Then, would that be a nihilist? Here, the source of the scripture also comes from the Great Perfection of Wisdom Sutra: 'Subhuti, if form were established as truly existent, then there would be emptiness and non-emptiness, solitude and non-solitude, happiness and unhappiness, peace and non-peace, and so on.' Having said that form is not established as truly existent, etc., it is extensively taught up to all-knowingness. It will also not be tainted by the fault of the fourth refutation.

Then, how is it? Just as all the scriptural sources of you Śrāvakayāna and Yogācāra schools belong to the straightforward meaning, as has been explained in detail before, we Madhyamikas will not slander those either, because those are methods of gradual guidance, just like the four intentions and the four hidden intentions. The harm of scripture is also like this, if it is said that the eighteen evil views mentioned in the Great Dharma Mirror Sutra will cause harm, then for the Madhyamikas, those will not cause harm, because those have abandoned the principle of the two truths, saying: 'Whatever meaning is absent, that is Suchness, there is nothing, everything is naturally pure.' Also saying, 'Conventional entities are also absent in convention.' Holding such wrong views is worthy of being stopped, so it should be widely explained. The faults of the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth refutations will also not be tainted, because all these phenomena that appear as conventional truth have been accepted, so there is no slander against those either. Also vowing that in the ultimate truth, those will also not cause harm, just like this, direct perception will also not cause harm, because the objects are inverted, the sense faculties are dull, even without the ability to see, etc., for those with cataracts, hairs, flies, and needle holes, etc., will appear, just like rocks, etc., making sounds, direct perception is also the arrogance of the present, therefore, what appears to whom and causes harm? Therefore, there is no harm of direct perception. Inference will also not cause harm, because nothing is established in the ultimate truth. Reputation will also not cause harm, because the world is shrouded in the darkness of ignorance, so in the investigation of the ultimate truth, just like excluding blind people when distinguishing precious gems, worldly people do not belong to this situation, so there is no harm of reputation. Abiding in the principle of the two truths, so there is also no harm of commitment. Placing the principle of the two truths on the chariot, well driving the reins of reason, entering the path of scripture, will not
