The Lamp of Precious Middle Way. The Lamp of Precious Middle Way. In Sanskrit: Madhyamaka Ratna Pradīpaṃ Nāme. In Tibetan: The Lamp of Precious Middle Way. Homage to the All-Knowing One. Qualities immeasurable are the basis, Faults and stains are cleared away, Having paid homage to the Three Jewels, I shall write about the Two Truths. Here, in order to liberate the beings of the five realms who are utterly distracted by the flood of suffering and who are embroiled in the battlefield of afflictions and conceptual thoughts, I shall explain the Lamp of Precious Middle Way, which dispels all dim views. Here, in the Sutra that shows the indivisible nature of the Dharmadhatu, it is said: "Manjushri, if the Dharmadhatu is taken as the measure, then there is neither conventional nor ultimate." However, for the sake of those whose eye of wisdom is covered by the cataract of ignorance, whose great clinging to self has entered their hearts, who have been manifestly attached to things since beginningless time, and whose delusion sees only this shore, I shall distinguish the Two Truths. Thus, the logicians who rely primarily on inference as a means of valid cognition cannot know the suchness and the Buddha's body and wisdom, which are extremely hidden, by examining and analyzing them, because they are the consciousness of outsiders. The sun is not the realm of the blind, The high place is not the realm of the sinful, Thatness and what is to be accomplished, Are not the realm of the logician. When examining a precious jewel, Is a blind person a valid measure? On this, first, the establishment of the conventional truth: Hair whirls and wool wheels, Two moons and the moon in water, A city of gandharvas and dreams, Illusion, mirage, and a snake, Echoes, mirror images, Shadows, bubbles, and rainbows, Objects such as lightning, Are conventional by mere appearance. Like a collection of water and wood, Unexamined, it has the characteristic of being pleasing, Born from causes and able to perform a function, It is the conventional of seeing only this shore. From beginningless time, like the state of dreaming while sleeping in ignorance, the consciousness and objects of knowledge that see only this shore are like tangled hair whirls.
