Just as a lamp is being lit, it dispels darkness. The so-called "just as" tends towards the impossible, how does it dispel? It means it does not dispel. The so-called "lamp is being lit" refers to the dharma that is being lit, which is being lit. This is to be proven, and it is the establishment of the means of proof. When a lamp is being lit, it does not encounter darkness. This is the establishment of a similar example, such as how sound is permanent when it is produced, just as a pot is impermanent when it is produced. Therefore, the inference here is that, in reality, a lamp is not dispelling the non-concordant side, because it is being lit, like darkness to a lamp. If knowledge and non-knowledge cannot be determined, because they belong to the category to be proven, then such obstruction cannot be determined either. Or, being lit is unmanifest, a lamp is not manifest, because it is unmanifest, like an unborn son cannot do anything. Or, the so-called "just as a lamp is being lit, it dispels darkness" is because it says that the example has no encounter, so it shows that the dharma of the lamp has no encounter. The so-called "when a lamp is being lit, it does not encounter darkness" is an example of similar dharma. The inference here is that, in reality, a lamp being lit is not dispelling darkness, because there is no encounter, like the darkness in the middle of the world has no light. Or, in reality, a lamp is not dispelling darkness, because it has not encountered the non-concordant side, like darkness. If, like the action of manifestation, even without encounter, it can dispel darkness with manifestation, so it cannot be determined, then, for karma, there is no manifestation either, and because karma is done for the sake of the enemy, the deity of the mantra will do unwanted things just because of the encounter, so it cannot be determined. If, again, because of attachment to one's own side, the eyes are covered, so it is said: a lamp can manifest light without encounter, this can be seen, darkness encounters

If it is said, "To appear without contact is unseen," this is not harmful for establishing the analogy. It should be examined: Is what is seen as it is seen, or is it something else? It is not the case that a lamp appears without contact. If you claim that a lamp can dispel darkness even without contact, then you should also accept this: If a lamp without contact can dispel darkness, then all the darkness existing in the world would surely be dispelled and no longer exist here. This is not accepted, therefore, you should not accept that a lamp can dispel darkness without contact. Furthermore, as you wish, for the sake of dispelling darkness, if a lamp can illuminate itself and other things, then darkness would undoubtedly obscure itself and other things. This is not accepted, it is accepted that it does not obscure itself and other things, therefore, this is a word of analogy that accords with the Dharma. Here, the inference is that, in reality, a lamp does not eliminate the dissimilar aspects that possess its own and others' nature, because it possesses dissimilar aspects, like darkness. Or, in reality, a lamp does not eliminate darkness, because it possesses dissimilar aspects, like a shadow. Therefore, in this way, a lamp illuminating its own and others' nature is clear, so there is no analogy. Therefore, what the opponent says, that like a lamp, birth also produces its own and other things, so it will not become the fault of being endless, that which is said remains as it is. Furthermore, how does birth produce its own nature? Does it produce by what is born, or does it produce by what is unborn? What will that be? If it is said by what is unborn, then how does this birth, by what is unborn, produce its own nature? Birth by what is unborn does not produce its own nature, because it does not exist, like before, that is how it is thought. If it is said by what is born, then if it is said that what is born produces, then what is there to produce when it is already born? Because for what is born, the act of producing becomes meaningless.
