The Commentary on the Root Verses on the Middle Way, The Lamp of Wisdom Well-Protected Opening The Commentary on the Root Verses on the Middle Way, The Lamp of Wisdom Well-Protected Opening In Sanskrit: Prajñāpradīpa-mūlamadhyamaka-vṛtti. In Tibetan: The Commentary on the Root Verses on the Middle Way, The Lamp of Wisdom. Volume One. Homage to the Three Jewels! Homage to youthful Mañjuśrī! Homage to the noble teacher Nāgārjuna! Homage to the venerable teacher Well-Protected Opening! By whom the suchness of phenomena is well-separated from conceptualization, Pacifying all elaborations, destroying all the darkness of evil intellect, Although not the object of words, yet explaining that (suchness), For the sake of all beings attaining the (Buddha) ground, I pay homage to that (Well-Protected Opening)! The teacher's (Nāgārjuna) teachings, merely in the form of verses, through subsequent inference, the clarification of refutation, and the revelation of that sole truth, and possessing the ability to pacify the net of evil views, expounded the essence of the Perfection of Wisdom. However, since some practitioners of pure conduct did not understand, therefore, in order to enable them to understand, I will explain the Madhyamaka treatises as they are. Now, the commentary on the treatise will be explained. Here, the Blessed One, with his supreme compassion, greatly stimulated wisdom, and for immeasurable eons, undertook the burden of accumulating immeasurable stores of merit and wisdom. He never tired of bringing benefit to others and establishing connections with them, even at the cost of his own life. He observed that beings in the world were immersed in the dense net of elaborations such as birth, cessation, annihilation, permanence, coming, going, difference, and sameness. Therefore, he churned the ocean of knowledge with wisdom, and attained the nectar of the suchness of all phenomena, which is completely free from all nets of elaboration, independent of others, and non-conceptual. Then, with the supreme vehicle, he proclaimed to beings the precious jewel of dependent origination, which transcends birth, age, caste, region, and time, and is unattainable by tirthikas, śrāvakas, and pratyekabuddhas, and is the ultimate truth and conventional truth.

Then, relying on the excellent truth, he taught with words such as birth and non-birth. The teacher also accurately revealed the nature of the Tathagata, such as non-birth, without error, and having understood suchness, a strong feeling of joy arose. In the manner of how he understood, he praised the Bhagavan, wanting to compose a treatise, with a heart moistened by the water of compassion, mainly to guide beings accordingly, wanting them to understand, wanting them to realize, therefore he said: Whoever arises dependently, Cessation is without arising, Without cessation, without arising, Without cessation, without permanence, Without coming, without going, Different meaning is not, meaning is not one, Pacified the proliferation, taught peace, Perfect Buddhas, speakers, To the excellent one, I prostrate. Thus he said. Although the word "whoever" is a general word, because it shows dependent arising with unique characteristics, he wants to express the Bhagavan, so it is only connected with the Bhagavan. What is the word "dependent arising" for? Even if the characteristics are shown, if the name of the basis of the characteristics is not shown, it cannot be understood, so this is to show it. Regarding the word "dependent arising," some say that the suffix of the word "dependent" means repetition, and the word "arising" means meeting, and the sound of the word "birth" means birth, so dependent arising is, relying on that and that meeting, it arises. Others say that the arising of things that each have the nature of destruction is dependent arising. Another saying is not acceptable, because when it is said, "Relying on the eye and form, eye consciousness arises," neither of these two meanings is present. So what is it? If this exists, this arises, because this arises, so this arises, that is, the meaning of having this condition is the meaning of dependent arising. Here some say, if before arising, the result meets with the condition and then arises later, then its dependent arising
