In the "Lamp Treatise," this is called "Examining Desire and Attachment," the sixth chapter. Now, in order to refute the distinctions of aspects that are contrary to emptiness, by means of showing that the aggregates and so forth are without inherent existence, the seventh chapter is begun, empowered by the meaning. Here it is said: In the ultimate truth, the compounded aggregates, elements, and sense bases should be held to be only those that possess the nature of compounded things, because they possess the characteristics of compounded things, such as arising. Here, that which does not exist is not held to possess the characteristics of compounded things, like a rabbit's horn. Because the aggregates and so forth possess the characteristics of compounded things, such as arising, therefore, by the power of the reasoning as stated, those that generate the activity of intelligence say that the compounded aggregates and so forth only possess the nature of compounded things. Here it is explained: Regarding this, do you consider the characteristics of compounded things, such as arising, to be compounded or uncompounded? If you say that they are compounded, then, for that, let us explain by considering arising for a moment: If arising is compounded, Then it will possess three characteristics. Possessing three characteristics means That the three characteristics will be assembled, Like possessing three cessations. Therefore, in the ultimate truth, arising and so forth should not be considered to be the characteristics of compounded things, because they are compounded, like the basis of characteristics. If the basis of characteristics is also a characteristic that indicates another basis of characteristics, therefore it is uncertain, then, because the basis of characteristics does not indicate that another basis of characteristics is compounded, therefore, since there is no contrary aspect, it is not uncertain. If arising and so forth are ultimately considered to be compounded, then, again, because they produce, abide, and disintegrate, they are the characteristics of compounded things, if you say so, then that is merely a vow because there is no following. Arising is arising, abiding is abiding, disintegration is disintegration, arising

It is because of denying the very activities of arising and so on, and admitting that they are the agents themselves. If even in name they are the agents, then arising is not a characteristic of the conditioned, because it is the producer. For example, it is not like the characteristic of father and son. Similarly, abiding is also not a characteristic of the conditioned, because it causes abiding, for example, food causes the body to abide, is it not like the characteristic of the body? Or, a maidservant holding a vase, causes the vase to be placed, it is not like the characteristic of the vase. Similarly, cessation is also not a characteristic of the conditioned, because it is the destroyer, for example, a hammer is a destroyer, it is not like the characteristic of the vase. Therefore, since arising and so on are not established as being the very characteristics of the conditioned, the meaning of the reason not being established is itself manifestly contradictory. Therefore, wanting to completely avoid the faults mentioned above, one should not understand that arising is conditioned in that way. Thus, for the moment, if arising is conditioned, then the fault of not being reasonable as a characteristic of the unconditioned has been shown. Wanting to completely avoid the faults mentioned above, if one wants to say that arising is unconditioned, then how can it be a characteristic of the conditioned? Arising does not have the characteristic of the conditioned, because if it is unconditioned, it does not exist itself, that is what is thought. Or, the dharma of the unconditioned is the very dharma of the unconditioned, therefore, ultimately, arising should not become a characteristic of the unconditioned, because it is unconditioned, for example, like space, therefore it harms its own subsequent inference. Arising is because of closely taking the manner of the word of characteristic, abiding and cessation are also closely taken, because one wants to say that they are characteristics of the conditioned. Those two are also negated in the same way, therefore it is not necessary to say the negation of those two again. Also, furthermore, if one wants to examine these arising and so on as characteristics of the conditioned, then should one examine them individually, or should one examine their collection? To that, first, each of the three, arising and so on, to become a characteristic of the conditioned
