There is none. Explanation: If there is attachment, how can there be desire-attachment? Thus, when desire-attachment arises in what is not attached, it relies on the condition called attachment. That desire-attachment becomes attachment by what attachment, it becomes attachment by that very attachment called attachment. The arising of desire-attachment is meaningless, and there is no subsequent inference to show it. The so-called "if it changes" is impossible, meaning "if there is attachment, how can there be desire-attachment?" Furthermore, the attachment of Deva-given is not the manifest cause of whatever desire-attachment arises in the continuum of Deva-given, because it is attachment, like the attachment of offerings. If it is said that this is impossible, if one establishes as the subject that attachment is the cause of desire-attachment that is different in continuum and not different, then it becomes proving what is already proven and contradictory in meaning. This is not good, because by establishing as the subject that attachment is the cause of desire-attachment that is not different in continuum, it is not proving what is already proven, and like what is to be proven and similar in kind, it is not contradictory in meaning because it prevents dissimilar aspects. If it is said that the attachment of offerings offers the establishment of desire-attachment, because it is promised as the cause of the arising of desire-attachment in the continuum of Deva-given, and because the cause of the agent, the attachment of another's continuum, is also the cause of the arising of desire-attachment in another's continuum, there is no example? This is also unreasonable, because it prevents non-common causes, and because the establishment of desire-attachment, such as flowers and perfumes, is the cause of the discrimination of desire, and because what is to be proven is special, it appears to be a seeming refutation. If it is said that there is desire-attachment before attachment, even so, there is also desire-attachment in attachment, existence and non-existence are also the same in order. The means of refutation will appear below, this is the concluding statement. How is it? That is to say: If before attachment, there is desire-attachment without attachment, if before attachment, there is desire-attachment without attachment, then in the absence of attachment

Let it transform! Furthermore, attachment exists based on that. Attachment exists based on desire without attachment, and this desire is called desire. If so, this flaw will occur: if something is established as desire because it causes attachment to this, then the thing depends on the basis, so it does not exist before the basis, just as a plant with fruit does not exist before the fruit. If one believes that desire exists without relying on attachment, then if desire exists, attachment will exist. This is not desirable, just as the arising of a plant without relying on the plant itself is unreasonable. Here, too, because it is a word with loopholes, inference is reversed from the meaning of the occasion, that desire is of a nature that does not arise without attachment, because it is with dependence, like the nature of attachment itself. If one says that even without a father, there are sons and so on, so it is uncertain. For that very reason, that too has already been refuted, so it does not harm. Here it is said that the moment of desire occurring earlier, the moment of attachment is not considered to arise, precisely because it is admitted that the moment of attachment arises later as the cause, so there is no fault. It is said: Even if desire exists, how can there be attachment? There will be no attachment, because the moment of desire is at a different time, so the moment of attachment arising later cannot be established as attachment itself, just as another plant cannot be established as the plant itself, because the moment of desire has passed, so it cannot now be established as attachment itself, so it will become a harm to inference, that is what is meant. How does that cause harm? The desire of Devadatta is not the cause of Devadatta's attachment itself, because it is desire, like the desire of a different continuum. For desire, there is also attachment, whether it exists or not, the order is the same. Here, there is no opportunity for dispute in examining the order, because the seeming reason has not been shown. Commentary on the Root Verses of the Middle Way, Lamp of Wisdom, Volume Six. If one thinks that that fault is not permissible, then both desire and attachment are considered
