can be proclaimed. Odor is what can be smelled. Taste is what can be tasted. Touch is what can be touched. Dharmas are for holding their own characteristics. What is the basis of these six aspects? It is the discrimination of desire, hatred, and ignorance. Desire is what causes attachment, it is excessive attachment. Hatred is what causes aversion, it is generating tormenting thoughts towards all sentient beings. Ignorance is what causes delusion, it is not knowing. This shows that the Dharma of inversion has a basis. Therefore, it can be inferred that desire and so on, which arise from relying on inversions of what is truly painful and unpleasant, are indeed existent, because they have a basis. Here, whatever is not truly existent has no basis, like the consciousness of a blind person's eye. Desire and so on have a basis in the discrimination of inversions, therefore, by the strength of the aforementioned reasoning, inversions exist, and relying on them, the arising of afflictions is established, so there is no fault in the analogy. Here it is said: Form, sound, taste, and touch, odor and dharmas are merely empty. Merely empty means without essence, they are those that have not even been tainted by a trace of essence. This is not a slander of conventional truth, for they are like a city of gandharvas, a mirage, and a dream. Like a city of gandharvas means that it is in accordance with the Dharma of being an object without a fixed place and time, and without a fixed continuum. Like a mirage means that although its essence is emptiness, it is in accordance with the Dharma of approaching the object of conditions because it is sought everywhere due to attachment. Like a dream means that although its essence is non-existent, it is in accordance with the Dharma of approaching the object of establishing cause and effect because it is temporarily considered to exist. Because of this, such forms and so on are like an illusionary person, and are in accordance with the Dharma of false appearance.

Those similar images arise without depending on the actions of the agent and are in accordance with the Dharma. Therefore, it is said, "How can the lovely and unlovely arise?" It means that they do not arise because the nature of ultimate truth is emptiness. Therefore, since the basis is not established in the ultimate sense, the reason for the argument is not established, and there is a contradiction in meaning. Furthermore, depending on what does the unlovely become unlovely? The unlovely is what is to be explained. This unlovely is unlovely, and children should explain it as the nature of unloveliness. Because it is impossible for the lovely to exist independently, it is impossible for the lovely to exist as the nature of loveliness without depending on the unlovely. This is its summary. Therefore, the lovely is unreasonable, because there is no unlovely, and the lovely does not become lovely without depending on it. That is its meaning. Similarly, depending on what does the lovely become lovely? The lovely is what is to be explained. This lovely is lovely, and children should explain it as the nature of loveliness. Because it is impossible for the unlovely to exist independently, it is impossible for the unlovely to be established as the nature of unloveliness without depending on the lovely. Therefore, the unlovely is unreasonable, because if the lovely does not exist, then the unlovely does not become unlovely without depending on the lovely. Therefore, if the lovely does not exist, how can desire arise? If the unlovely does not exist, how can hatred arise? Because these do not exist, ignorance also does not exist. Only because these do not exist, ignorance also does not exist. If it is said that there is no fault in saying that these exist, if it is said that there is no fault in saying that these do not exist, therefore, the argument as shown before is irrefutable. The seventeenth volume of the Commentary on the Root Verses of the Middle Way, the Lamp of Wisdom. Here it is said: In the ultimate sense, the perversions of the lovely and unlovely certainly exist, because the Blessed One has declared this in the Sutra Pitaka. The Blessed One

The kind of reversal spoken of in the Sutra Pitaka exists, for example, just like selflessness. In the Sutra Pitaka it says: "To grasp permanence in impermanence, to grasp self in selflessness, to grasp happiness in suffering, and to grasp beauty in ugliness is a reversal." Because there are these statements, therefore, in the ultimate truth, the reversals of suffering and ugliness certainly exist. Here it is said: If someone establishes reversal, then for the establishment of the reversal of suffering and ugliness in the conventional truth, this establishment is permissible. But in the ultimate truth, it is not permissible. The statement "The Buddhas said there is no self, and also said there is no selflessness" has already been answered. Because the self itself is not established, there is no analogy. There is also no reason, because in the ultimate truth, the Sutra Pitaka does not admit the existence of reversal. Here, there are two kinds of reversals: those that are in accordance with samsara and nirvana. Among them, those that are in accordance with samsara refer to: grasping permanence in impermanence, and so on. Those that are in accordance with nirvana refer to: grasping impermanence in impermanence, and so on. Both of these are reversals, because they should be abandoned after obtaining non-conceptual wisdom, because they are the aspects that are not in accordance with it. If it is said that seeing impermanence, etc., as impermanence, etc., is not a reversal, therefore it should not be a reversal itself, then what is the meaning of reversal? If it is said that it refers to the reversed view of grasping permanence in impermanence, then, therefore, it is said: If it is said that impermanence is permanence, impermanence is empty of permanence, and grasping emptiness as permanence. Such grasping is a reversal, and such knowing is focused on the meaning of reversal, so it is also a reversal. If that is the case, there is no permanence above, how is grasping not a reversal? Because the permanence in emptiness is also empty of inherent nature. How is grasping emptiness as permanence not a reversal? This is the meaning of the phrase "this is not a reversal." For example, if one is free from desire in the three realms, how is it not liberation? It is just like liberation.
