That is indeed certain. If it is conceived as being substantially existent, then it will be contradicted by fame and scripture, so that is also not reasonable. The sixteenth fascicle of the commentary on the Root Verses of the Middle Way, "The Lamp of Wisdom." Others have said: The five aggregates are to be designated, but they do have intrinsic existence. Moreover, that is also the object of expression to be designated as the Thus-Gone One. Therefore, having firmly fixed in the mind what the unconditioned intrinsic existence of the Thus-Gone One is, if one then proves that the Thus-Gone One has no intrinsic existence, then that is proving what is already established, because the aggregates are made. However, if one refutes that a thing arises from something else, that it arises from other causes and conditions, and that which is born obtains its own nature, then in that case there is no example, because all things are possessed of the intrinsic existence of the characteristic of arising from something else. Thus, for example, we hold that the form of a fire wheel and so forth, and those objects of eye consciousness and so forth that are without conceptualization, are only possessed of intrinsic existence. That is not good, because here the fire wheel itself is an illusion, and the top and bottom are parts of space, and it is held that the fire wheel, which is empty of the intrinsic existence of a wheel, is the example itself, and because the arising of the form of a fire wheel and so forth is prevented, and because substantial existence is prevented, and likewise, the objects of eye consciousness and so forth, such as forms and so forth, are also prevented in the same way that seeing with the eye is prevented. If something does not exist from intrinsic existence, how could it exist from something else? It is meant that because the thing of self depends on another, the other is established. Furthermore, whatever relies on the thing of another, that is designated. That is not reasonable as self, for example, like a magical person. That is without self, which is synonymous with without intrinsic existence. Thus, if something is without self, how could that become a Thus-Gone One? It is meant that this is an example of proving that things have intrinsic existence. Therefore, that is the very fault of the example being incomplete in the proof.

It also exists. Or, the opponent says that even if self-nature is not established, since it arises from other things, the analogy itself is established, so all things can only be established if self-nature exists. In response, it is said here: If self-nature does not exist, how can other things exist? Because self-nature is not established, what is considered as other, because there are no causes and conditions, the other things that arise from those causes and conditions do not exist. This is what is thought. Therefore, the fault of the analogy exists. Here it is said: Although the self-nature of the Tathagata is not determined, since it exists, the analogy is established, so there is no fault. Here it is said: Apart from self-nature and other things, what is the Tathagata? That is non-existent, because apart from self-nature and other things, things are not established in the ultimate sense, so it is not without fault. The Sthavira Nikāya says: The Tathagata is established in dependence on the skandhas, and it cannot be said to be one or different, so it is neither the self-nature of the skandhas nor the self-nature of others. Therefore, the Tathagata is established, and as previously stated, the inference is that things are not established without self-nature. Here it is said: In the ultimate sense, the Tathagata or something that is not the Tathagata, if it is established in dependence on the skandhas of the Tathagata, then if that is the Tathagata, then relying on it is meaningless. If that is not the Tathagata, then, if it does not depend on the skandhas, if the Tathagata exists, it was previously composed of other self. That is initially dependent and transformed, and after dependence, it depends on transformation from that. If it transforms in that way, without relying on the skandhas, there is nothing of the Tathagata. Because apart from the upādāna, the Tathagata cannot be established. What exists without dependence? That is the self-nature of the Tathagata. How can that be upādāna? That will not be the upādāna of the skandhas of the Tathagata, the Tathagata
