Furthermore, if there is an encounter, how does the cause produce the effect? If the effect exists, then producing it again as before becomes meaningless. This should be understood. Alternatively, this is another way of refuting: For those whose tenets hold that both cause and effect are empty, if the cause is empty of the effect, how does it produce the effect? What should be said? Because it is empty, it is like other things, thus it is shown. For those whose tenets hold that the cause is not empty of the effect, if the cause is not empty of the effect, how does it produce the effect? It should be said that because it is not empty, it is like the nature of the effect, and this should be understood. Commentary on the Root Verses of the Middle Way, The Lamp of Wisdom, Volume Fifteen. The Vaibhashikas assert that even before the effect arises, it is not empty of the nature of the effect. To refute them, another line of reasoning will be shown: If the effect is not empty, it will not arise; if it is not empty, it will not cease. If the effect is not dependently originated but exists by its own nature, then arising is meaningless. Therefore, it will not arise. For that which has not arisen, its own nature is unchanging, therefore it will not cease. If that is the case, the non-empty will also become unceased and unborn. But this is not desired, because the effect is considered to be of the nature of arising and ceasing. Therefore, whatever exists is seen to be of the nature of non-arising and non-ceasing. Because it exists, for example, like the present moment. Thus, by inferring that existence itself is non-arising and non-ceasing, they are negated. Therefore, there is the fault of the subject negating the nature of the property in the proposition. The Lokayatas assert that before the effect arises, it is of the nature of non-existence, it is of the nature of being empty of the effect. Even if it arises, it is not the nature of other things. To them, it can also be said: How can the empty arise? How can the empty cease?

Ya, therefore, emptiness, in the ultimate sense, should not arise, because it does not exist. For example, like a flower in the sky. In the ultimate sense, the seed essence does not have non-seed things, so it should not perish, because there are no non-seed things, for example, like disappearing from a non-seed. Or, we are observing the ultimate truth, if we say that expressing the nature of dependent arising with emptiness is emptiness, then if there is a slightly non-empty thing, it will be the opposite of this. Such a thing is not known even in name, like a flower in the sky. A non-empty fruit will not arise, nor will it perish. If so, the non-empty thing will neither perish nor arise. This shows that non-emptiness leads to no birth and no death. If it is emptiness, then the fruit has the nature of birth and death, so it can show what is to be established and the nature that can be established. Therefore, in the ultimate sense, the fruit is emptiness, because there is birth and death, for example, it should be said to be like an illusion. Similarly, if the fruit becomes a non-existent nature, then even in name there will be no birth and no death, because it does not exist, for example, like a flower in the sky. How can emptiness arise and perish? Because there is no birth and death, emptiness will neither perish nor arise. That is also undesirable, so this also, as mentioned above, can show the meaning of the proposition and the reason. Here, the subsequent inference only differs in the proposition, that is, "in the ultimate sense, the inner fruit is not a non-existent nature," the rest is the same as before. Or, inferring with a non-existent nature, because there is no birth and no death, thereby excluding the birth and death of the fruit, this shows that there is a fault of excluding the difference of the subject in the proposition, which is the meaning of the words here. Furthermore, the cause and effect of arising, are they one or other? To this: The cause and effect becoming one, will never be reasonable.
