It should be explained as before, that in the ultimate sense, one thing does not have the nature of one thing, because it can be counted, just like something different from it. Similarly, it should also be said that "two things do not have the nature of two things," and so on. Analyze the stated proposition in detail, and then extend it as before. The word "etc." should also be stated in the same way for small, large, long, short, near, far, before, after, cause, effect, conditioned, unconditioned, and so on. Those who assert that time exists say: In the ultimate sense, time is the only thing that exists, because it has measurement. Here, whatever does not exist has no measurement, like a horse's horn. Time has measurements, such as moments, instants, short periods, nights, days, fortnights, months, seasons, half-years, years, and so on. Whatever has measurement exists, like grains and so on, therefore time is the only thing that exists. Here it is said: "Do not grasp at the non-abiding time." The collection of conditioned things is of the nature of arising and ceasing, therefore it is non-abiding. For that, you should not even nominally grasp it as time. "What is the time to be grasped? Since there is no abiding existence, from what other than the object, by what, is its nature to be grasped? What is necessarily abiding also does not exist. How can it be established when it is not grasped?" Because if it can be grasped, it should be established, that is what is meant. In this way, this shows that the measurement of moments and so on is the dharma of the complete cessation of other actions such as the movement of the conditioned sun, and not the dharma of time. Therefore, the basis of the argument is not established, and there is no example either. "Do not grasp at the non-abiding time." For this, others say: For this, if things are definitely abiding, they can be taken from measurement, such as "this tree is tall," "this thread is long," "this person is short," "this elephant is big," and so on. Time is not so definitely abiding, therefore for it, measurement cannot be established.

It is said: That is not good, because the formless necessarily does not abide, and it is also measurable. Here it is said: Time is constant, because it has moments, instants, short periods, etc., as well as past, future, present, etc. These are due to the differences of various close abidings, like a jewel, or like the difference of ripening leading to what can be ripened. Here it is said: In our view, things depend on and rely on other things, and for such things, the terms moment, etc., are used. Regarding this, if time is dependent, then to call it a thing in name is exactly what we want. If it is from the ultimate truth, then even the thing of the ultimate truth is not manifest, so where is the non-existent time? It is non-existent. This is the meaning of the words. Therefore, the fault mentioned earlier has not disappeared. Here it is said: In the ultimate truth, time is only the nature of substance, because there is a sign. Here, whatever does not exist has no sign, like a rabbit's horn. Time has signs of before and after, simultaneous and non-simultaneous, long and fast, etc., therefore time is only the nature of substance. Here it is said: If no things exist at all, then the word "also" is a meaning that must be grasped. In our view, in the ultimate truth, no things exist at all. In name, relying on the different streams of formations, the knowledge of before and after arises; from the moments of different formations approaching, simultaneity arises; from the opposite of that, non-simultaneity arises; from many streams of formations entering, long duration arises; from few streams of formations entering, the knowledge of fast arises. Therefore, the knowledge of before, etc., is the dharma of formations, so there is no reason, how can time exist? Because the reason for proving it is not established. This is their thought. If the knowledge of before, etc., is the dharma of formations, but it is the dharma of time
