If asked, how is it known that it is not time? Because it is impossible to infer its characteristics of being constant and singular. In terms of convention, the cognition of "previous" etc., is not the cause of being constant and singular, because it is cognition, just like the cognition of forms etc. If it is said that time is real, because it exists in a imputed way, then how should it be explained? If it is said to be like forms etc., then, as previously stated, things like forms etc. are not established in the ultimate truth, so where is the unreal time? Because the nature of form does not exist, if the things that are taken as examples do not exist, how can time exist? Without giving an example, time cannot be established, this is the final conclusion. Chariots, armies, forests, etc., are not real, but they are also imputed to exist, therefore, this reason is uncertain. If it is said that things like chariots, which have parts, are considered real, so there is no fault, then, the view that things with parts are real has already been refuted, so it is not without fault. Some say that time is only established in dependence on things, such as "staying for a moment," "staying for a day," "will stay for a month," etc. To these people, it should be said: If no things exist, how can time exist? Their meaning is that there is no other time apart from things. Those who claim that time exists say: Time is real, because it is the cause of producing special expressions. Here, we have not seen anything that does not exist as the cause of producing special expressions, such as a rabbit's horn. We see that time is the cause of producing special expressions such as "has been done," "is doing," "will do," therefore, time is real. But this statement is not correct, because producing special expressions such as "has been done" is the characteristic of conditioned phenomena, so the reason itself is not established. Moreover, this is also contradictory, because the cause of producing special expressions itself is the conventional truth. Therefore, that is how it is.

Therefore, since time is not established in any way, the meaning of the reason "it is the cause of manifestation" is itself not established. Here, the meaning of the debate is that by refuting the faults of the proponent initially stated in the opponent's debate, and by showing that one's own proponent is without fault, thereby refuting the distinctions of the incompatible side through emptiness, it is shown that time is without inherent existence. Therefore, the Blessed One said in the Sutra Requested by Noble Good Arm: "Know well those three times, the past, the future, and the present. Among them, whatever formations have passed and ceased are called the past time. Whatever has not come and has not occurred is called the future time. Whatever is occurring and proceeding now is called the present time. Among them, whatever aggregates, elements, and sources of the present time are, know well that they are impermanent and certainly impermanent. Why is that? Because the world does not remain longer than a moment. Even that moment has a time of arising that is another time, a time of abiding that is another time, and a time of ceasing that is another time. Know well that even that moment is impermanent and certainly impermanent," and so on. Similarly, "Whatever is the suchness of phenomena, that is not past, nor is it future, nor is it present," and so on. Similarly, "The Thus-Gone One is not past, nor is he future, nor is he present," and so on, all that is established. The nineteenth chapter, called "Examination of Time," from the Commentary on the Root Verses on the Middle Way, Lamp of Wisdom, composed by the Teacher Aryadeva, is complete. Now, in order to refute the distinctions of the incompatible side that has shown time to be without inherent existence, thereby composing the twentieth chapter of debate by virtue of showing the meaning of cause and effect to be without inherent existence. In the immediately preceding debate, since time was not established, the fault of the reason was pointed out; if time were established, there would be no fault. Therefore, in order to show that the desired meaning can be accomplished, it is said here: In ultimate reality, time should be understood as existing only,
