Furthermore, if someone desires liberation through the manifestation of the image of the cause, that is also impossible, because the individual does not change, and what was not prevented earlier cannot possibly give rise to unerring wisdom later. Because it is not prevented, like the non-Buddhists, there is no liberation. Even if wisdom arises, it will fall into the fault of being something that arises, and therefore not being real wisdom, and so on. Holding onto the dharma of the agent, etc., just like a lord, a teacher, or a victor, because it is imputed onto the individual, liberation is also imputed. It is enough to mention it in passing; the occasion itself should be examined. Thus, the yogi who strives to realize the suchness of the internal and external sense bases, because he realizes that they are empty: In internal and external dharmas, When self and what belongs to self are exhausted, Attachment ceases, When that is exhausted, birth is exhausted. Thus, if in internal and external dharmas, the wrong clinging to what is called "its self" and "mine" is exhausted, then the four kinds of attachment, namely desire, views, vows and precepts, asceticism, and the assertion of self, will cease. Among these, by temporarily seeing selflessness, one will abandon the attachment to the assertion of self, and by abandoning it, one will also abandon the remaining attachments, because these are the birthplace of the attachment to the assertion of self. Because attachment ceases, the existence that arises from its birthplace will be exhausted. When that is exhausted, birth is exhausted, and that is called liberation. Because liberation is also seen through the realization of the selflessness of the person, it belongs to the Hearers and Solitary Realizers. The vehicle of the Buddhas is attained by practitioners abandoning the obscuration of afflictions and the obscuration of knowledge. The method for abandoning the obscuration of afflictions is as previously explained. In order to abandon the obscuration of knowledge, this is taught: Liberation comes from the exhaustion of karma and afflictions. Karma and afflictions are the cause of birth, and when these are exhausted, liberation from suffering is liberation. The cause of birth is karma and afflictions, and these do not arise from objects, because for those who are free from attachment, even if there are objects, these are not present.

Then, from what does it arise? (The scripture says:) "Karma and afflictions arise from conceptualization." That is to say, karma and afflictions arise from the nature of conceptualization that distinguishes between lovable and unlovable things, because they arise when these conceptualizations are present. Here, it should be understood that whatever exists and whatever arises, the former is the cause of the latter. For example, just as a sprout arises when there is a seed, if there is non-noble, inappropriate attention, which is conceptualization, then karma and afflictions will also arise. If there is no conceptualization, then they will not arise either, just like the continuum of a noble being. Among them, karma refers to the manifest actions of the mind associated with afflicted thoughts, and the actions of body and speech that are aroused by it. Afflictions are those that afflict the sentient beings' continuum, such as desire and so on. The cause of karma and afflictions, which is conceptualization, arises from elaboration, so it is said to be "born from elaboration," which arises from the nature of elaboration that clings to conventional truth. Then, by what will elaboration be stopped? (The scripture says:) "Elaboration is stopped by emptiness." Here, the word "through realization" is omitted. It is stopped by realizing the nature of the absence of self of phenomena. Or, "Elaboration is stopped by emptiness." Here, "emptiness is emptiness," meaning that if the knowledge of emptiness arises, then elaboration will be stopped. If merely seeing the absence of self of persons can achieve the pacification of karma and afflictions arising from conceptualizing lovable and unlovable things, then does seeing the absence of self of phenomena become meaningless? It is not so, because one wants to completely eradicate the entire network of afflictions, including their habitual tendencies, and it is impossible without seeing the absence of self of phenomena. Furthermore, non-afflicted ignorance, which is the self-arisen wisdom that thoroughly understands the objects of all phenomena as they are, also needs to be abandoned through the realization of the absence of self of phenomena. Therefore, seeing the absence of self of phenomena is not meaningless.
