Because it is the cause of the object. If it is said that the cause of the object is not uncommon, then there is no example either, because pots and so on are uncommon causes of the object. Here, the five aggregates and the body are not uncommon causes of my object, because it has been vowed. Therefore, the answer that can refute the establishment of what has been said is not. The Thirteenth Volume of the Commentary on the Root Verses of the Middle Way, The Lamp of Wisdom. Or the yogi should examine this himself: Is this, which is called self, the nature of the aggregates? Or is it something other than the aggregates? To this, first of all, if the aggregates are the self, then there will be birth and destruction. Therefore, they are not the self, because they have birth and destruction, like a pillar. If it is other than the aggregates, then there will be no nature of the aggregates. Therefore, it is only non-existent, because it is not the nature of the aggregates, like a flower in the sky. Similarly, one should also understand the absence of self through reasons such as unborn and without cause. Those who say there is a self say that the self only exists, because it sees things. Thus, if the body has no self, then the sense organs without consciousness are like windows, and it should not be possible to see things. Because that self should see other things that are different from its nature. Whoever sees things is the self, therefore the self only exists. This is not good, because it has not been established that seeing things is the nature of the self, and there is no concomitance. If it is said that this body is with the self, then it will also become an uncommon reason. This also answers the reasons such as because the right side sees, the left side recognizes, because of remembering experiences, because of the object of karma, and so on. Other self-proclaimed wise people say that the sound of the body having a self exists in reality in other places, because it is nominally applied to some things, such as calling a Brahmin's child a lion.

Whatever is similar in sound, it is like seeing the lion's mane and piled-up hair from something other than that. Similarly, the sound called "I," the approximate designation for the body, senses, and mere consciousness, is not an approximate designation for some things. Therefore, that which exists truly in that other than that is I, therefore I am only existent. Or, whatever mind recognizes as "I," it must be determined that it has a truthful realm, because it is a reversed recognition of other realms, like mistaking a tree stump for a person. Similarly, recognizing the realm of cause and effect as I is also a reversed recognition, therefore, because it is a reversed recognition of other realms, whatever realm other than that is truthful, that is I, therefore I am only existent. Here it is said, if one does not ascertain the nature of the self from the perspective of one's own established tenets, but generally asserts the self in conventional terms, then it is an argument for what is already established. Just as it is said in our scriptures, the sound of "I" is truthful with respect to consciousness, but it is an approximate designation with respect to birth and so on, just as one wants to designate a chariot based on its parts, one wants to designate a sentient being based on the aggregates, and consciousness is called "I" because it takes up the possibility of rebirth. If it is thought that the mind is the actual object of the sound "I" and that the object of the mind that knows "I" is not actual, because it is made, like the body, then, if the opponent truly shows that the mind is the actual object of the sound "I" and is not the truthful object of the mind that knows "I," then it is an argument for what is already established, because one wants to completely abandon all views of self. However, in conventional terms, that is not reasonable, because the designation of sound and mind and the ascertainment of reality are asserted to be established in conventional terms even in one's own tenets. In ultimate terms, the sound "I" cannot even be established as truly existing in me, just like saying the sound of a lion.
