And, because the basis of the particular itself is not established, the example is incomplete. If we cannot prove to you that there are forms, etc., similarly, can you not prove to us that we do not have forms, etc., so is the fault the same? It is not so, because merely by negating birth, one possesses non-birth, therefore negating the thing itself. And, because one does not want to abandon the view of non-thing, so it does not show, therefore those who have not fallen into the two extremes of thing and non-thing view are different from those who have fallen into the two extremes of thing and non-thing view, how could it become the same fault? Merely because there is no inference showing thing and non-thing, so one does not want to establish it, therefore only our intention will be established, not establishing one's own tenet. Or, those who say there is birth should be asked: Before the fruit is produced, are the causes and conditions not possessing function, or possessing function? If one wants to be like the first examination, here it says: Not possessing function is not a cause, it is what produces the fruit. This is the remainder of the words. Not possessing function means being empty of the function of producing the fruit that one wants to express. As shown, those are not producing it, because they are empty of it, like something different from it, so it has been shown. If it is said to possess function? Here it says: Possessing function or not, it is not. The word "or" means distinction. For this, is it shown that the causes and conditions possess function because they produce the fruit? That is also not wanted, because it does not obviously tend towards the production of the fruit, therefore, the meaning of the reason is not established. The Sautrāntikas say: Only at the time when the fruit is produced, the causes and conditions possess function, helping each other, therefore they admit that it is a cause and condition, so the meaning of the reason is not established, and there is no subsequent debate. Here it says: Because it is born relying on these, therefore these are called causes and conditions. Fruit etc.

Because fruit arises in dependence on these, therefore, you consider these fruits, etc., to be truly causes and conditions, which is well known. It is said that the use of the word "it is said" indicates that the master does not approve of this here. Therefore, as long as it does not arise, until then, how can these not be causes and conditions? As long as the fruit does not arise, how can these fruits, etc., not become non-causes? Because these have no causal nature at all, this is the meaning of the statement. For example, it is like saying that as long as one does not read, one will not become a wise person. If someone says this: We do not admit that causes and conditions are causes and conditions before the fruit arises, therefore this does no harm. It is not that it does no harm, because here it is shown that causes and conditions are not causes and conditions before the fruit arises, therefore the master thinks that at the time when the fruit arises, it is also shown that causes and conditions are not causes and conditions. How is it? In reality, fruits, etc., are not the nature of causes and conditions at the time when the sprout arises, because it cannot be said that it is the same or different from that, for example, just like the previous moment. This shows that things do not arise from self, other, or both. For those who say that this is an argument for what has already been established, because both fruit and cause cannot be said to be the same or different, even if it cannot be said, they only produce fruit. For those who say this, it should also be refuted in the same way. For those who say that it arises, it should also be refuted. In reality, their causes and conditions only produce the inner sources of arising, because they are causes and conditions, for example, just like fruits, etc., produce sprouts. For those who do not produce, there is no causal nature at all, for example, just like a rabbit's horn. Here it is said, if this is actually a cause and condition, then is it existent or non-existent? It is also not reasonable to be both, therefore, whether it is existent or non-existent, causes and conditions are acceptable.
