I do not fixate on samsara, nor do I fixate on nirvana. Why is that? Because even though the Thus-Gone One indicates samsara, no being will actually revolve in it; even though the Thus-Gone One indicates nirvana, no being will actually pass into nirvana. These words have been established. Composed by the scholar Lekdenjé. From the Commentary on the Root Verses on the Middle Way, The Lamp of Wisdom, the chapter entitled "Examination of Bondage and Liberation," which is the sixteenth chapter. The Commentary on the Root Verses on the Middle Way, The Lamp of Wisdom, Volume Twelve. Now, similarly, in order to refute the opposing aspects of emptiness, and by means of showing that actions and results are without inherent existence, the seventeenth chapter is begun. In the immediately preceding chapter, it was shown that formations, sentient beings, and persons are not suitable to revolve in samsara. In order to show this, here, those proponents, having composed treatises, fabricate the meaning of their pledges and say: You consider formations to be either permanent or impermanent, but they are not suitable to revolve in samsara, because it would lead to the faults of permanence and annihilation. Therefore, it has been shown: How can formations enter into nirvana? In no way is it reasonable. Therefore, in order to prove how it does not lead to the faults of permanence and annihilation, and also that formations exist in samsara, we must argue thus: In ultimate reality, internal formations definitely exist in samsara, because actions and results are related. Here, for that which does not exist, we do not see the connection between actions and results, like the formations of the son of a barren woman. Internal formations are related to actions and results, therefore, by the power of the reason stated above, in ultimate reality, internal formations definitely exist in samsara. Regarding that, first of all, action is: Well subduing oneself, Benefiting others, loving-kindness, Whatever that dharma is, in this and other lives, Is the seed of fruits. Well subduing oneself means being able to correctly subdue oneself and turn away from non-virtue, that is, the mind that abandons non-virtue, and the consciousness that is in accordance with it, is called

is the concluding word. To benefit others means to benefit others through giving, kind speech, completely saving from fear, and so on. What is called loving-kindness arises from friendship. Or loving-kindness itself is loving-kindness, because it states the corresponding causes and conditions for one's own benefit. Such a mind is Dharma. That is the seed, a synonym for cause and condition. Of what is it the seed? It is the seed of fruits. Where is it? In this life and other lives, due to the causes and conditions experienced in this life and future lives. The mind is said to be the seed, because it completely arouses the actions of body and speech. What is contrary to Dharma is non-Dharma, and non-Dharma, sin, and non-virtue are different names. What is contrary to non-Dharma are the names of Dharma. What is unstated is divided into four types: arising from maturation, arising from conduct, arising from craftsmanship, and arising from emanation. It is unstated because maturation does not give rise to what is desired and undesired, and because it does not convey good and non-good. Thus, those things that are different due to the distinctions of Dharma, etc., are also of two types: The supreme of the upright ones said: Actions are mind and thought. The supreme of the upright ones is the Bhagavan, who is both upright and supreme, because he has completed all that should be traversed, and because he is the most supreme among the upright ones called Hearers, Solitary Buddhas, and Bodhisattvas. Therefore, those things that are different due to the distinctions of Dharma, non-Dharma, and what is unstated are of two types, namely mind and thought. The distinctions of those actions are fully proclaimed in various ways. This is a summary explanation. The detailed explanation is: Among them, what is the action that is mind? It is considered to be intention. The word "among them" is meant to be a specific designation. What is the action that is mind? It is considered to be intention, and what is called intention arises from the mind, reaching the ultimate end solely through the gateway of the mind.
