By means of (power). If you admit that there is inherent existence, it is tantamount to admitting that it will change into something else. Therefore, you are harming the former position, and the purpose of the argument is not accomplished. Because if there is inherent existence, it is impossible to change into something else. Here it is said: I speak of the nature of non-existence, which is emptiness, but I do not speak of inherent existence. Because it is not reasonable for any dharma to have inherent existence. If, even though it is unreasonable, one still engages in conceptualization due to the power of being accustomed to conceptualization, then, if there is inherent existence, how can it change into something else? Because it has already been answered, and changing into something else will not occur unless it is the emptiness of inherent existence. This is how it should be understood. The refutation itself is also conventional truth, because it is proving that it exists only in conventional truth, and not in ultimate truth, so it will not harm the former position, and the change into something else is also accomplished in conventional truth, so the purpose of the argument is not unaccomplished. Here, the Vaibhashikas say that in ultimate truth, the six sense sources, such as the eye, are inherently existent, because they are the cause of the consciousness of existence, just like nirvana. To this, here, the water of mirages and so on are also the cause of the consciousness of existence, so the purpose of the argument is uncertain. Even if one definitely grasps "it is the cause of the consciousness of existence" and establishes the argument, the purpose of the argument is still not accomplished, or the meaning is contradictory. There is also this other fault: that of grasping "existence" as permanent, and viewing "non-existence" as annihilation. Both of these are wrong views, because they become obstacles to attaining the heavens and liberation. Like this, if it is permanent, then what has become happy is also happy, and what has become suffering is also suffering. Therefore, in order to generate happiness and pacify suffering, one will not universally rely on the path that leads to the cessation of suffering, because it is unreasonable to do so for things that exist. If it is annihilation, then for things that do not exist, afflictions and purified suffering and happiness are also unreasonable. Who would correctly take vows and practice, and for what?

It will enter, because it is unreasonable to enter into non-existence. Therefore, the wise should not abide in existence and non-existence. Thus, because those views that regard existence and non-existence are flawed views, therefore, the wise, wanting to transcend the solitude of samsara, in the high abodes and gardens, in the cities of the gods, easily obtain the happiness of the enjoyment of goddesses, and the happiness of the cessation of all feelings, the happiness of the complete pacification of all elaborations, wanting to experience these happinesses, those who possess self-nature, should not abide in the existence and non-existence of things, because abiding in these will lead to the faults of permanence and annihilation, one should understand it in this way. If someone asks, how does viewing existence and non-existence lead to the views of permanence and annihilation? Whatever has an inherent nature, it is not non-existent, therefore it is permanent; saying that it existed before but does not exist now, therefore it will lead to annihilation. All Madhyamikas consider it to be merely nominal, therefore, for those who say that phenomena such as form are existent, because they are the cause of the consciousness of existence, and that phenomena that are unborn and unceased are non-existent, there will be no such fault. In the ultimate truth, because the self-nature to be realized is emptiness, and it is unborn, therefore there is no view of regarding it as existent; in the ultimate truth, the self-nature of phenomena is not non-existent, because it has causes, like an illusion, so there is no view of regarding it as non-existent either, or because there is no manifestation of the consciousness of existence and non-existence, so there will be no falling into the two extremes of existence and non-existence. Here, the meaning of the explanation is that by refuting the differences of the aspects that are not in accordance with emptiness, it shows that dependent origination has no annihilation and no permanence. Therefore, with the utmost power to completely suppress, there is no annihilation or permanence in form. Similarly, in feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness, there is no annihilation or permanence. Whatever there is no annihilation or permanence in form, feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness, that is Prajnaparamita.
