One should not abide in that, and similarly, one should not abide between the two, because it is said that emptiness is beyond extremes, therefore the middle way depends on extremes, and without extremes, it cannot be established. Thus, not abiding anywhere is liberation. Having thus shown the supreme essence of wisdom in the manner of the former and the latter, now, intending to show the tenets of the outsiders, collected from the essences of various different wisdoms, they say: desiring virtues such as tranquility. Thus, it is said, those who regard the great god of tranquility as a deity are the tranquil ones, like the Buddha. The word 'etcetera' refers to those who hold time to be permanent, etcetera. They believe that virtues such as tranquility appear in various forms, as it is said: Those who speak of Ishvara as the cause speak of the virtues of Ishvara, such as subtlety, lightness, being worthy of worship, becoming the master, becoming independent, going anywhere, possessing all desires, and abiding in joy and pleasure. They proclaim: Whoever becomes the smallest, the only place of birth, dwells, he creates and destroys all this. He is the powerful, divine god, worthy of worship. The performer of virtues attains perfect peace. This being has knowledge or no knowledge, and has no freedom over his own happiness and suffering. Sent by Ishvara, he either falls into an abyss or only goes to the heavens. Thus they say: Hands and feet, eyes and faces and bodies, doing much and destroying, therefore it is called subtle. Space and wind and earth, water and fire make a place, gathering and increasing, therefore it is called light. Exercising power over all beings, those who dwell and those who wander, doing whatever they wish, therefore it is called becoming the master. Dependent on oneself, having independence, having no fear of anyone, because of becoming independent of everything, therefore it is called becoming independent. Objects and food and drink, and whatever is thought of in the mind, the fixed course of the mind does not gather, therefore it is called going anywhere. In the three realms it is said to be supreme, those who dwell and those who wander, and all beings say it, therefore it is called worthy of worship. Courage, dust, and darkness, the three, where do they

Transformation. It can be done by just opening the eyes slightly, therefore it is called "endowed with all desires." Liberation or the body of a god, whatever one desires, everything can be obtained through desire, therefore it is called "dwelling in joy and happiness." Thus it is explained, and it is believed that everything is accomplished through peace. Those who speak of the virtues of time also say: Who is Shangpo, the god of wealth, whose father is the king of wealth, even the fearless wrathful one was killed, time is difficult to pass. It is also said: The elements are ripened by time, beings are made hateful by time, time makes sleep awaken, time is difficult to pass. It is also said: The triple-layered protected abyss is the ocean, the army is the union of rakshasas, and wealth is the union of yakshas. His treatise is equal to the Buddha, and the son who proclaims the sound also declines due to the power of time. And so on, everything is said to be the virtue of time alone. Similarly, the virtues of the water god, the son of Vaishravana, the son of Ashoka, the sun, the moon, and so on are also spoken of. The Samkhyas say there are no virtues. Regarding the statement "the Samkhyas say there are no virtues," these people are called Samkhyas because they explicitly state that the cause of the arising of things is a definite number, that is, they arise from a cause determined by numbers. They do not accept the virtues of the gods, so they say there are no virtues, which is a negation of non-existence. If asked why, the Samkhyas say: Joy, satisfaction, and delight, as well as the nature of a happy and peaceful mind, from which joy also manifests, these are the virtues of courage (sattva). Displeasure, complete suffering, as well as sorrow, desire, and intolerance, the reasons for which appear, these are considered to be the characteristics of dust (rajas). Ignorance and likewise delusion, recklessness, sleep, and distraction, sometimes also appear, these are considered to be the virtues of darkness (tamas). Thus, three virtues are acknowledged, and when they are equal, they are not obvious, and that which has no characteristics is nature (prakriti). From that slight bit and slight change of nature (prakriti), the great ego arises. From that arises the very clear ego, which comes from transformation, from dust, and from arising. Among these, the first is courage (sattva), with vast knowledge, from which arise the eyes, ears, and nose.
