is to see those cessation and path. Whoever sees dependent arising also sees those four truths: suffering, origin, cessation, and path. This is called the examination of the noble truths, which is the twenty-fourth chapter. Here it is said: If all these are empty, there is no arising and no destruction. From what abandonment and cessation does one desire to attain nirvana? If all these beings are empty, then there is no arising and no destruction. Since they do not exist, from what abandonment and cessation does one desire to attain nirvana? Because abandonment and cessation are not reasonable. Therefore, it is not so. If it is not emptiness, then by abandoning afflictions and ceasing aggregates, one can also attain nirvana. Here it is said: If all this is not empty, there is no arising and no destruction. From what abandonment and cessation does one desire to attain nirvana? If all these beings are not empty, then there is no arising and no destruction. Since they do not exist, from what abandonment and cessation does one desire to attain nirvana? Because abandonment and cessation are not reasonable. Therefore, one should understand that nirvana is not reasonable in this order. So, what should it be like? There is no abandonment and no attainment, There is no cessation and no permanence, There is no cessation and no birth, That is called nirvana. Therefore, one should know that the nature of nirvana is like that. Also, Nirvana is not a thing, It will become the nature of old age and death, There is no old age and death, Things do not exist. Briefly, nirvana is not a thing in any way. If it becomes a thing, it will become the nature of old age and death. Why? Because there is no thing without old age and death. Also, If nirvana is a thing, Then nirvana will become conditioned, A thing that is not conditioned, There is nothing at all.

Because it does not exist in any way. Furthermore, if Nirvana is real, how can Nirvana not be dependent? There is nothing that is not dependent. If one believes that Nirvana is a real entity, then it is unreasonable to say that Nirvana is not dependent. Why? Because there is nothing that is not dependent. Therefore, Nirvana is not a real entity. Here it is said: Then Nirvana is non-existent. Here it is said: If Nirvana is not real, how can it be non-real? If Nirvana is not real, then it is not non-real. Why? Because if reality is fully established, then non-reality is also fully established. This is the tenth volume, the last volume, of the Commentary on the Root Verses of the Middle Way by Buddhapālita. Furthermore, for whom Nirvana is not real, for him non-reality does not exist. For whom it is believed that Nirvana is real, for him non-reality does not exist. Like this, whatever is real should not be called non-real. Therefore, Nirvana is also not non-real. Furthermore, if Nirvana is not real, why is Nirvana not dependent? Whatever is dependent, non-reality does not exist. If one believes that Nirvana is not real, then it is unreasonable to say that Nirvana is not dependent. Why? Because whatever is dependent non-reality, nothing exists. Therefore, Nirvana is also not non-real. Said: Then how should Nirvana be described? Said: The reality of coming and going, whatever is taken as a basis or cause, that is not dependent, not a cause, Nirvana is shown to be. Because of not realizing the perversion, the reality of coming and going, the aggregates, etc., whatever is taken as a basis or cause, that, because of perversion, is not dependent, not a cause, the aggregates do not arise, this is Nirvana shown to be.

Furthermore, the arising and destruction, the Tathagata taught to abandon. Therefore, nirvana is reasonably neither real nor unreal. The Blessed One taught to abandon arising and destruction, therefore, nirvana is reasonably neither real nor unreal. Here someone says: Then, nirvana is both real and unreal. Here it is explained: If nirvana is, both real and unreal, then, real and unreal, becoming liberation is unreasonable. If nirvana is both real and unreal, then real and unreal become liberation, which is unreasonable, because two mutually contradictory things cannot exist simultaneously. Also, if nirvana is, both real and unreal, then, nirvana is not independent, because it depends on both. If nirvana is both real and unreal, then nirvana becomes not independent, because nirvana depends on both real and unreal. This is undesirable, therefore it is unreasonable to say that nirvana is both real and unreal. Also, for this reason it is unreasonable: If nirvana is, both real and unreal, then, nirvana is unconditioned, real and unreal are conditioned. Nirvana should not be both real and unreal. Why? Because nirvana is unconditioned, while real and unreal are conditioned. Therefore, due to this difference in cause, nirvana should not be both real and unreal. Here someone says: Nirvana is neither real nor unreal, but the place where those two exist is nirvana. Here it is explained: If in nirvana, there are both real and unreal, then, those two cannot exist in one thing, like light and darkness. It is also unreasonable to have both real and unreal in nirvana, why? Because mutually
