Mūlamadhyamakavṛtti Buddhapālita Mūlamadhyamakavṛtti Buddhapālita In Indian language: Buddhapālita-mūlamadhyamaka-vṛtti. In Tibetan: Mūlamadhyamakavṛtti Buddhapālita. Volume One. Homage to the Three Jewels! Homage to youthful Mañjuśrī! Homage to the noble teacher Nāgārjuna! Homage to the venerable teacher Buddhapālita! Thus, the teacher intends to subsequently explain dependent origination. Because he truly sees the profound nature of dependent origination as it is, he possesses an astonishing mind. He has eyes that shed tears born from faith, and because he possesses the sign of hair standing on end on his body, he places his palms together on his head. He places this verse that explains the ultimate truth, "The Tathāgatas are the Dharmakāya," in front of him as if he were present. Homage to the Tathāgata, the supreme guru! Whoever speaks of dependent origination, Which is without cessation and without arising, Without interruption and without permanence, Without coming and without going, Neither different nor the same in meaning, Pacifies all elaborations, Is the best among those who speak of the Buddhas, I pay homage to that尊. Thus, he performs the practice of paying homage to the cause that existed before. Whoever speaks of Īśvara, time, atoms, nature, and essence, etc., to the world wandering in dense elaborations. To this world, he explains the ultimate truth called dependent origination, which is extremely profound. Without cessation and without arising, without interruption and without permanence, without coming and without going, the meaning is neither different nor the same, all elaborations are pacified, able to go to the city of nirvāṇa, showing this straight path of peace. Homage to the supreme among those who speak of the perfectly complete Buddha! Thus it is said. The Blessed One has understood all the arguments of external heretics as being like the babbling of children, and like blind people groping. The teacher has truly seen this, therefore he is said to be the supreme among those who speak. The term "without cessation" means that there is cessation for this.

It is not. The remaining words should also be combined in the same way. That verse is like the Sutra Pitaka, and the remaining treatises will explain it. Moreover, due to attachment to words, it will be done through this and that door, but it will not be done in order. If asked, what is the need to follow and show dependent origination? The answer is: The teacher, the compassionate one, seeing that sentient beings are oppressed by various sufferings, in order to liberate them, wanted to truly show the true nature of all things, therefore he wrote the "Praise of Dependent Origination". As it is said: Not seeing the truth is bondage, Seeing the truth is liberation. Therefore it is said. What is the true nature of all things? The answer is: It is emptiness of inherent existence. The unskilled ones, whose eyes of wisdom are obscured by the darkness of ignorance, if they cling to things as having inherent existence, they will generate desire and hatred towards them. When the light of dependent origination dispels the darkness of ignorance, and the eye of wisdom sees the emptiness of inherent existence of all things, then desire and hatred will not arise towards that which has no place to dwell. For example, some people have the thought that the woman in the mirror is a woman, and thus generate desire, and with the mind associated with it, they discriminate against her. When one truly understands, the thought of a woman will disappear, and one will be free from desire, and great shame will arise, just like mocking the arising of desire for a nature that has no place to dwell. Similarly, the Blessed One also widely declared: Monks, for a woman, the inner female organ is not truly seen; monks, if there is a woman, the inner female organ is not truly seen. Therefore, the teacher Aryadeva also said: The seed of existence is consciousness, The objects are its field of activity, If one sees the objects as selfless, The seed of existence is cut off.

Thus it was said. Therefore, the teacher composed this treatise in order to thoroughly demonstrate the selflessness of all phenomena. Here it is asked: When the Tathagata, the all-knowing, all-seeing, possessor of great compassion, has already explained and thoroughly demonstrated dependent arising in this and that way, what need is there to further demonstrate it? Answer: It is true that the Tathagata himself has explained and thoroughly demonstrated dependent arising, but because he explained and thoroughly demonstrated it in terms of worldly conventions, with expressions such as birth, etc., even now some fools who are attached to mere words do not understand the extremely profound dependent arising. They think that phenomena are only existent, because they speak of their birth, cessation, going, and coming. Some think that only from what exists do thoughts of permanence, annihilation, identity, and difference arise, but such thoughts do not arise from non-existent things like rabbit horns. For those who think in this way, the teacher composed this treatise, which prioritizes reasoning and scripture, in order to thoroughly demonstrate the nature of dependent arising. Furthermore, for the very reason that the Tathagata explained and thoroughly demonstrated dependent arising, the teacher should also thoroughly demonstrate it again. What is there that is worthy of being thoroughly demonstrated again if it has not been explained and thoroughly demonstrated? For example, even worldly treatises have been explained and thoroughly demonstrated by previous teachers, so even now their students continue to speak about them. Therefore, the teacher should reasonably thoroughly demonstrate it again. Here it is asked: Why are the eight things, such as cessation, etc., refuted? Would it not be sufficient to simply say, "No cessation, no birth; no annihilation, no permanence"? Answer: Because those who assert the self-nature of things mostly show it through worldly conventions, and through the expression of the eight things such as arising and ceasing, they show that things are truly existent, therefore, they refute those eight things such as cessation.
