Similarly, those who truly contemplate or engage in debate also contemplate and engage based on the meanings of cessation and so on. For example, some say that all things are of the nature of arising and ceasing, momentary, and continuously arising. Others say that the nine substances, such as earth, are permanent. Still others say that dharma and non-dharma, as well as person, space, time, person, and life, these six substances are permanent. Similarly, most people argue that life and body, fire and firewood, cause and effect, quality and the qualified, part and whole are both the same and different. Similarly, some say that qualities endowed with action are permanent cycles. Others say that atoms and mind are both non-moving. Still others say that life and person are both endowed with movement. They also believe that (life and person) go somewhere after accomplishment. Therefore, due to truly contemplating and engaging in debate, (the Buddha) refuted the eight views of cessation and so on. Here it is asked: Then, why is cessation refuted first, and arising refuted later? Shouldn't non-arising be spoken of first? Is it reasonable to think so? Answer: That should not be criticized. Why? Because those who are skilled in letters have a definite order for the application of composition, up and down, but for others, there is no certainty. Here it is asked: Even so, if there is arising, there will be cessation, and if there is no arising, there will be no cessation. According to the order, it should be said that there is no arising first. Answer: Friend, like this, arising is first, and cessation is later. What examples can make us believe what is said? All that is said are examples. How so? For example, for the time being, this arising is meaningless, because if there is arising, there will be old age and death, as well as diseases and sufferings, strife and bondage, and so on, enemies. Just like that. Explanation: For the arising in which there is death, I think that death must be prior. If death is not prior, then samsara would become having a beginning.

Here, that is also not desired. Therefore, since samsara has no beginning and no end, it cannot be said that birth precedes death, or death precedes birth. It is also said below: If birth precedes aging and death, then there would be birth without aging and death, and birth even without dying. It is said: Oh, if there is no imperishable, no birth, then it is meaningless, it will not happen. Just as if trees do not grow, there is no forest, and they will not be blown down by the wind. If this is another example. Said: What is the difference here? Said: The difference is this, because there is no birth that precedes cessation here. For example, a tree ceases elsewhere, but there is no growth here. Said: This also has growth from the seed ceasing first, so that is also growth only from cessation preceding it. Here it is said: That is not the same, why? Because other ceases and other grows. For example, here the seed ceases and the sprout grows, the sprout itself ceases and the sprout itself does not grow, therefore that is not the same. Said: That is exactly the same, why? For example, both birth and death, also whoever dies, that is not birth. If whoever dies, then that is born, then in that case it would fall into the fault of permanence. Whoever is a god, that will only be a god, whoever is an animal, that will only be an animal. If that is the case, the birth and wandering done by karma and afflictions will be without confusion, that is also not desired. Then whoever dies, that will be born. That cannot be said, therefore that is exactly the same. Here, other ceases, other grows, that is also unreasonable. If the seed and the sprout are both other, then those two would also not have the names of cause and effect, since there is a name, therefore those two are not other. Furthermore, here the speakers, after planting the seeds, say, I planted this tree, I gave birth to this child, this tree is mine, this child is mine, they say.
