Thus it is. Furthermore, if they become cause and effect, do they become one or different? Upon thorough examination, cause and effect as one is never reasonable. Cause and effect as different is never reasonable. Why? Like this: If cause and effect are one, the producer and the produced become one. If cause and effect are different, cause and non-cause become the same. Thus, if cause and effect become one, then the meaning of the producer and the produced becomes one, which is unreasonable. For example, how can father and son become one? Seeds and sprouts also do not become one. Furthermore, if cause and effect are different, saying, "This is the cause, this is the effect," then cause and non-cause become the same. Just as a rice seed is different from a barley sprout, so too a barley seed is different from a rice sprout. Why then is it said that a barley seed is the cause of a barley sprout, but not of a rice seed? Therefore, cause and effect are neither one nor different. For those which do not have establishment as one or different, there is no establishment, because establishment apart from those is unreasonable. Furthermore, if a cause produces an effect, does it produce something that inherently exists, or does it produce something that does not exist? To this I shall say: If the effect inherently exists, what does the cause produce? If the effect inherently does not exist, what does the cause produce? If the effect inherently exists, it is already completely present without being made, so if it exists, what else does the cause produce for it? If you think that it produces that very thing, that is unreasonable, for there is no act of production for what is already produced. If that effect inherently does not exist, how can the cause produce it? If the effect inherently does n

If it also arises from a cause, then there is no doubt that a garland can be woven even with the flowers of a tree. Therefore, it is not appropriate for both the existence and non-existence of a result to arise from a cause. It is not a producer. The cause itself is not established. If no cause produces a result, then it is not established as a cause itself. In this way, if it is said to be a cause that produces, if it is not a producer, it can still become a cause, then nothing will not become a cause, and everything will become a cause, which is also not accepted. Therefore, the cause itself is not established. If the cause itself is not established, to whom will the result belong? If the cause that produces the result does not exist, without a cause, to whom will the result belong? In this way, if one thinks that the result is the result of a cause, that also does not exist. If it does not exist, then it should not be called a result. If it is established, then there will be a son without a father, which is also not accepted. Therefore, if the cause does not exist, then the result also does not exist. The collection of causes and conditions, if it does not generate itself, how does it generate the result? The examination of the collection of causes and conditions that generate the result, for the time being, it does not generate itself. Why? Because it is known that the collection is multiple. The teacher Aryadeva also said: The collection is not singular, similarly, there is no thing. If it is also different from it, it also exists singularly. Now examine, how does the collection, which is not self-generated and not fully established, generate the result? If the collection, which is not self-generated, also generates the result, then it will be evident that an ungenerated mother also generates a son. Therefore, there is no result produced by the collection and not produced by the collection. If there is no result, then where does the collection of conditions exist? Therefore, because the collection is not self-generated and not fully established, the result produced by the collection does not exist. There is this thought about it:

If someone thinks that the result produced by non-aggregation exists, then it should be said that the result produced by non-aggregation does not exist. When the result produced by aggregation itself is not reasonable, how can the result produced by non-aggregation arise from no cause? If it could, then children could be born without parents, but that does not happen. Therefore, the result produced by non-aggregation also does not exist. Someone says: What is the use of saying so many things that contradict the world? If it exists, then for the time being, it can be considered that there is an aggregation of causes and conditions, and because of these, the result will also exist. Reply: Are you building a castle in an empty village? You think that the result does not exist, but you think that the aggregation exists? If the production of the result itself is called aggregation, then when the result itself is not reasonable in any way, the result does not exist, how can the aggregation of conditions exist? Master Aryadeva also said: Because all the names in the world appear as aggregations, therefore things are not truly existent, and the aggregation of non-things also does not exist. Therefore, because the result does not exist, the aggregation also does not exist. Therefore, someone says that in order to achieve the result of time and aggregation itself, time is the only thing that exists, which is unreasonable. Someone says: If time and cause, result, and aggregation do not exist, then what else exists? Saying this is saying that everything does not exist. Reply: No, it is unreasonable for you to think that time and phenomena exist from their own nature, but it can be established that they are established in dependence. "Examination of Cause and Result" is the twentieth chapter. Someone says: Time and phenomena are the only things that exist, why? Because at some time and place, some things arise and perish. For example, if time and phenomena did not exist, then there would be no difference, all times, all things, from all places, would arise and perish, but in reality this does not happen. Therefore, time and phenomena are the only things that exist. Reply: If some
