Since there is not even a thing called "fruit," how can it be valid to say that the cause produces the fruit? If it is said that even though there is nothing, it has the power to produce such a thing, then it would undoubtedly be able to produce rabbit horns as well. Furthermore, the cause does not produce the fruit whether it is seen or unseen. If it is said that the cause produces the fruit, then does it produce it from being seen or from not being seen? Neither of these is reasonable. Why? If it is temporarily said that it produces from being seen, then it would become producing what has already been produced. Because what has not been produced will not be seen, and for what has already been produced, there is no need to produce it again. If it is again thought that the cause produces the fruit without being seen, then whatever the cause does not see, it would produce, but it also does not produce. Therefore, the cause does not produce the fruit even without being seen. Furthermore, if it is said that the cause produces the fruit, then does it produce it from contact? The contact of fruit and cause is not reasonable in any way. Why? The past fruit and the past cause, the unborn and the born, to meet together is never possible. The past fruit and the past cause and the unborn cause to meet together is never possible, because the fruits and causes of the past and future do not exist. The past fruit and the born cause to meet together is also never possible, because the fruit does not exist. The unborn fruit and the unborn cause, and the past cause and the born cause, to meet together is never possible. The unborn fruit and the unborn cause and the past cause to meet together is never possible, because the fruits and causes of the past and future do not exist. The unborn fruit and the born cause to meet together is also never possible, because the fruit does not exist. The born fruit and the born cause, and the unborn cause and the past cause, to meet together is never possible.

The arising of a result never occurs in conjunction with the arising cause. Because it is not reasonable to say, "This is the cause of this, this is the result of this," and because it is not reasonable for those that have become like that to meet. The arising of a result and the non-arising of a cause, and the past, never occur together, because there are no causes of the past and the future. If there is no meeting, how does the cause produce the result? Therefore, it is not reasonable in any way for the result to meet with the past, future, and present, and for the cause to meet with the past, future, and present. How can it be reasonable to say that the cause produces the result? Even if there is a meeting, how does the cause produce the result? If you think that the cause and result meet even though it is unreasonable, then how can the cause itself produce that result? In this way, there is nothing to be produced again for what exists, and there is no function of the cause. Furthermore, if the cause is empty of the result, how does it produce the result? If the cause produces the result, is it empty of the nature of the result or not empty? If you think that the cause that is empty of the nature of the result produces the result, then that is not reasonable in any way. If it is reasonable, then sand would also produce sesame oil, and water would also produce butter. Or, just as there is no sesame oil in sand and sesame, and there is no butter in water and yogurt, what is the difference between sesame producing sesame oil and sand not producing it, and yogurt producing butter and water not producing it? Therefore, it is not reasonable to say that the cause that is empty of the nature of the result produces the result. If you think that the cause that is not empty of the nature of the result produces the result, then it should be explained. If the cause is not empty of the result, how does it produce the result? If the cause itself is not empty of the nature of the result, how can it reasonably produce that result? What

If the result exists, then it is not empty of inherent existence. What has already arisen does not need to be produced again. Therefore, the assertion that a cause that is not empty of inherent existence produces a result is also accepted because people cannot refute it. *Buddhapālita's Commentary on the Root Verses of the Middle Way*, Volume Eight. Furthermore, if it is thought that a cause produces a result, then will something that is not empty of inherent existence or something that is empty arise and cease? To that, I will explain: A non-empty result does not arise, a non-empty result does not cease. A non-empty result is also unceasing and unborn. If the result is not empty of inherent existence, but truly exists by its own nature, then it will not arise or cease. Why? Because it truly exists by its own nature. Because change is not appropriate for inherent nature. Therefore, if you completely conceive that the result is not empty, then because it is permanent, your result will also be unceasing and unborn. Therefore, a non-empty result will not arise and will not cease. If someone thinks that an empty result will arise and cease, then I will explain: How can emptiness arise? How can emptiness cease? That which is empty is also unceasing and unborn. If the result is empty of inherent existence, without its own entity, then how will it arise and how will it cease? If you conceive that the result, although without inherent existence, still arises and ceases, then it must be said, is something other than the nature of the result arising and ceasing? If something other than the entity of the result arises, then what effect does it have on the result? For example, if something that is a result arises, it will not become a result. Therefore, if you completely conceive that the result is empty, then because it is non-existent, it will also lead to unceasing and unborn, which is not desired. Therefore, an empty result will not arise and will not cease.
