What is obtained by the doer is called maturation. That is, if it is experienced in this life, or in a future life, or in other instances, due to various specific conditions, how does that which is unborn, dependent on conditions, and reliant on conditions, hold in a way that is not wasted? If it is already born, then it must cause the doer to experience the fruits, namely happiness and suffering. If that is the case, then what further purpose does it serve to be non-wasted? If, even having arisen, it does not for a while cause the doer to experience happiness and suffering, then who caused it to arise? What is the characteristic of that which is known as having arisen? If even having arisen, it does not cause the doer to experience happiness and suffering, then afterwards it will not do anything to it, and who will be the one to offer it to the doer later? Therefore, without fully understanding the meaning of that alone, merely pacifying with the words of non-wastage as if they were real, so many numerous, diverse, and meaningless things have been said. Thus, karma is only devoid of inherent existence. Because it is devoid of inherent existence, it is unborn. Because it is unborn, it will not be wasted. It should be viewed as certain in that way. Otherwise, if karma had substantiality, there would be no doubt that it would become permanent. If karma were to have inherent existence, there would be no doubt that it would become permanent. In this way, since inherent nature is unchanging, it is not reasonable for it to change into something else. Therefore, karma would become unmade, because the permanent has no action. If karma is not permanent, it would necessarily become unmade. Why? Because the permanent has no action. In this way, for the permanent, which has the nature of being unchanging, it is not reasonable to do anything further. How could unmade karma ripen into a permanent result? In this way, change is not reasonable for the permanent. If it is thought that karma is permanent and unchanging, but it encounters the result that arises from its cause, even then, if karma is unmade, then encountering the unmade would become frightening.

Likewise, even if one has not committed non-virtuous deeds, because that non-virtue exists in him alone, undesirable results will occur, and great fear will arise in him. Furthermore, not abiding in celibacy will also become a fault for him. If karma is not created, then another great fault will also befall him, namely: although someone has not engaged in impure conduct, because impure conduct exists, no one should abide in practicing celibacy; and, although someone has not engaged in impure conduct, because celibacy exists in him alone, abiding in celibacy also becomes meaningless, therefore it will also lead to not abiding in celibacy. Similarly, all terms will undoubtedly contradict themselves. If karma is not created in this way, then worldly people create terms for the sake of results, such as farming, trade, animal husbandry, reliance on kings, and so on, as well as mastering logic, crafts, and arts, and all the quoted teachings, all of these will contradict themselves. Why? Because it will lead to both creating and not creating producing results. Furthermore, the distinction between meritorious deeds and sinful deeds will also become unreasonable. If karma is not created, then the distinctions such as "this is creating meritorious deeds" and "this is creating sinful deeds" will also become unreasonable. Why? Because it will lead to all uncreated virtuous and non-virtuous deeds existing, and their results will also be obtained. Moreover, its ripening will ripen, and the ripening will ripen again and again. If because karma exists, therefore self-nature exists. If that karma is both self-nature existing and will produce results, then its ripening, even if it has already ripened, will ripen again and again. Why? Because if karma necessarily exists, then self-nature exists. Just as it previously necessarily existed in self-nature, and produced results, so too it necessarily exists now.

Therefore, it is necessary to produce fruit elsewhere in this place. Or, even if it seems certain, it does not produce again and again what has already produced fruit before. The reason for this difference must be shown. Reply: You are only completely accomplishing the fault of karma having inherent existence. In this way, you are not showing even a little that karma does not have inherent existence. Therefore, if there is any reason that would make me believe that karma does not have inherent existence, please show it. Listen to the explanation. This karma is the nature of affliction, and those afflictions are not real. If afflictions are not real, how is karma done by it? What is called karma arises from the cause of affliction. Thus, actions done by body, speech, and mind possessed by an afflicted mind are called karma. Therefore, since it arises from the cause of affliction, is of the nature of affliction, and is the essence of affliction, it is not inherently existent. "Those afflictions are not real" means that those afflictions, which are the nature of karma, are also not truly existent. Their entity is not real, that is, it does not exist as the entity of affliction itself, so it is not inherently existent. This is a concluding statement. Further below, it will also say: "Those that arise dependently on what is agreeable and disagreeable, and are inverted, are not from inherent existence. Therefore, afflictions are not real." If those afflictions, which are the nature of karma, are not real and are not inherently existent, then what will karma be the nature of? Because karma arises from the cause of affliction, and afflictions arise from the cause of inversion, therefore karma and affliction are spoken of. Reply: Karma and afflictions are indeed inherently existent. Why? Because their fruit is inherently existent. Here, karma and afflictions are shown as the cause of bodies, and bodies are inherently existent.
