Said: Those things that are partially joined, called 'being joined,' they have joining. Said: For that, there is also that itself. If, for a moment, we examine whether those partially joined things, one part joining, means that the whole joins, then because it is one, it should not join. If one part joining also becomes a distinct self, then because it is different, how could it join? If those things have a little joining, and a little not joining, then there will be two selves. For those parts that are joined, because they are not one, there is no joining. For those parts that are not joined, also because they are other, there is no joining. Said: Even without being joined, it is easy. For the moment, whatever is joined, that exists. If joining exists, because there is joining, joining is also completely established. Said: Alas, the hope is so great! For those things for which even being joined is not reasonable, and starting to join is not reasonable, how could joining be reasonable? When it is said, 'When will it become one?' if it is one, how could it join? If even when joined, it is not one, then even so, because it is not other, it is not not joined. Said: Even without joining, it is easy. For the moment, before oneness, whatever thing exists that will become other, that is the joiner, temporarily existing. Said: Are you jealous of eunuchs? Do you think that without joining, the joiner exists? If the joiner is produced from the cause of joining, which makes it join, then joining is not reasonable in any way. If that does not exist, without something to make it join, how could the joiner exist? Therefore, having put reasoning first in that way, and examining it as it truly is, then, being joined and joining, and the joiner, do not exist. If those do not exist, then how could the nature of existence arising from the proof shown by your joining be established? The Examination of Joining is completed, called the Fourteenth Chapter. Said: Because you do not see the existence of things, you think that these things are without inherent existence, and you also say that things are 'dependent arising,' and you also say that things are without inherent existence.

Answer: How can things be both arisen and without inherent existence? If the inherent nature of things cannot arise solely from causes and conditions, then what else could arise from that? If the inherent nature of woolen cloth cannot arise solely from threads, then does the inherent nature of threads alone arise? If nothing arises, then how can it be said to arise? Explanation: Haven't you seen the horse while riding it? You say that things arise dependently, but haven't you seen the lack of inherent existence of those things? Even the dull-witted can easily understand that inherent existence does not arise from causes and conditions. Here, my thing is called inherent existence, and my thing exists, but it should not arise from causes and conditions either. Like this, what is the use of existence? If there is no use, what do causes and conditions do? If it arises from causes and conditions, then the inherent nature that arises from causes and conditions becomes fabricated, which is also unreasonable. Question: Inherent existence is only fabricated. Answer: Why? Because, like this, the thing of woolen cloth did not exist before, but is made later. Explanation: How can it be acceptable to say that inherent existence is fabricated? How can inherent existence be called fabricated? Question: When the negation of those meanings is incompatible, if it is said to be inherent existence, then it is not fabricated, and if it is said to be fabricated, then it is not inherent existence. At that time, it is both inherent existence and fabricated, who with a mind would think that way? Question: What kind of reasoning do you think inherent existence possesses? Explanation: Inherent existence is uncreated and does not depend on others. Whatever is not established by fabrication, and does not depend on causes and conditions, and whose own inherent nature remains unchanged, that is the reasoning of inherent existence. Whatever is established by fabrication, and also depends on causes and conditions, that is dependent on others, and being dependent on others, it is not fully established by its own essence, therefore it is not inherent existence.
