Because it is completely accomplished by itself without depending on aging, death, and birth, and because aging and death have no basis and no cause, that is also undesirable, because it would excessively fall into faults. Therefore, birth and aging-death together are also unreasonable. Therefore, just as in the cycle of existence that you examine here, the sequence of before and after and together of birth and aging-death is possible. If there were none of those, then what is it that is said to be 'I' without birth and aging-death that revolves in samsara? It is said: Whether those have a sequence of before and after and together or not, it is fine. If there is, then birth and aging-death are temporarily existent. Those are also not without a basis, but belong only to something; something exists, that is I, therefore I am only existent. Explanation: For what is it that the sequence of before and after together is impossible? That birth and that aging-death, for what reason should one elaborate? If one examines by first applying reason in that way, for which birth and which aging-death is the sequence of before and after and together impossible and non-existent, why do you elaborate and say, 'Birth is that, death is that'? If some birth or aging-death exists, then it must be that it appears before, after, or together. Since that is the case, who would say that those things that are said to be 'birth and aging-death exist' do not have a sequence of before and after and together, and exist naturally? Which mindful person would hold onto it? Therefore, birth and aging-death are unreasonable. If there are none of those, how could I reasonably exist? Therefore, abandon the statement about I that contradicts reason! Cause and effect themselves, as well as nature and the basis of nature themselves, feeling and the feeler themselves, and whatever meaningful things there are. If one examines in this way, just as the sequence of before and after and together of birth and aging-death is unreasonable, so too, cause and effect, as well as nature and the basis of nature, feeling and the feeler, and whatever other meaningful things there are, liberation and nirvana, knowledge and the knowable, valid cognition and the measurable, and so on, all those things that are examined as existing, also unreasonably exist in a sequence of before and after and together.

How is it? For example, if the result occurs before the cause, then the result becomes causeless. Even if there is a result, what is the use of the cause? Examining the cause would also become meaningless. If the cause occurs before the result, then the cause becomes without result, which is also unreasonable. Because if there is no result, how can it be a cause? If it can be a cause, then anything can become a cause. If the cause and result occur simultaneously, then there is the same fault, both become causeless, and the result is completely independent of the cause, but arises completely from itself, which is also unreasonable. Similarly, if the characteristic occurs before the basis of the characteristic, then, if the basis of the characteristic has not arisen, whose characteristic will it be? If it is called a characteristic because it signifies, then the basis of the characteristic that it signifies has also not arisen, so it does not exist. If it does not exist, how can that which does not signify be a characteristic? If the basis of the characteristic occurs before the characteristic, then the basis of the characteristic becomes without characteristic, which is also unreasonable. Because if there is no characteristic, how can a thing exist? If it can exist, then rabbit horns and so on would also exist. Examining the characteristic would also become meaningless, if it is considered a characteristic in order to thoroughly establish the basis of the characteristic, then, if the characteristic does not exist, the basis of the characteristic can still be established, then what is the use of the characteristic for it? If the characteristic and the basis of the characteristic occur simultaneously, then there is the same fault, both become causeless, and the basis of the characteristic is also completely independent of the characteristic, but arises completely from itself, which is also unreasonable. Similarly, if the feeler occurs before the feeling, then, if there is no feeling and it has not arisen, whose feeler will it be? If one is a feeler because one feels, then the feeling itself has not arisen, if it does not exist, then what does it feel? If it does not feel, then how can it be a feeler?
