Destruction and non-existence, where it exists, that is non-existence itself. If it does not exist, then what characteristics do birth, duration, and destruction become? Since it has been explained, therefore destruction should not be the characteristic of the compounded either. Therefore, in this way, birth, duration, and destruction separately should not be the characteristic of the manifestly established compounded. Because it is said, "They arise together," those who understand the state of phenomena say that birth, duration, and destruction arise together, therefore separately they should not be the characteristic either. It is said: Aggregates are the characteristic. Explained: Even if it is an aggregate, how can one thing be at one time? Those separate things that are not characteristics, those contradictory aggregates, how can they exist simultaneously in one compounded thing? Like this, when there is birth, there is no duration and destruction; when there is duration, there is no birth and destruction; when there is destruction, there is no birth and duration, therefore birth, duration, and destruction separately and aggregates, should not be the characteristic of the compounded either. Because the characteristic is not reasonable, the compounded is not existent. It is said: What is the use of such a refutation alone? That which exists is birth, duration, and destruction, that is the compounded. Explained: I do not compose for the sake of refutation, I compose for the sake of truly understanding it. Please say, what is called birth? It is said: A pot is born. Explained: Think carefully for a moment, in what state can it be called a pot, please think carefully and then speak. Because when it has not yet been born, it cannot be called a pot, only after it has been born can it be called a pot, and the pot is also compounded, therefore when it possesses the three characteristics, birth is the characteristic of the pot, how can that be established? What is the use of birth for something that already exists? What is the use of a characteristic for something that possesses a characteristic? If it is thought that something that is not a pot is born, and after being born it becomes a pot, that is also not reasonable. What is meant by saying that something that is not a pot is born, is it a lump of clay? Is it coarse cloth? Or what is meant by something that is not a pot?

Or is it that there is nothing? In this regard, if wool or felt is produced, how will it become a pot after it is produced? If there is nothing called "non-pot," then how will something that does not exist be produced? If it is produced, then why doesn't a rabbit's horn grow? Therefore, the so-called birth is unreasonable. If there is no so-called birth here, then what is born is conditioned. How can this be reasonable? How can there be abiding and destruction without birth? In that case, birth, abiding, and destruction are merely worldly terms. Furthermore, for birth, abiding, and destruction, if there is another characteristic of conditioned phenomena, then there will be no end; if not, then they are not conditioned phenomena. Do birth, abiding, and destruction, which are said to be characteristics of conditioned phenomena, have another characteristic of conditioned phenomena, or not? In this regard, if they have another characteristic of conditioned phenomena, then it will lead to endlessness, because birth has birth, and birth has another birth, and birth has another birth, so it will be endless, which is not desirable. If it is thought that endlessness is not possible, so they do not have another characteristic of conditioned phenomena, then in that case, they are not conditioned phenomena, and if they are not conditioned phenomena, how can they become characteristics of conditioned phenomena? It has been said before. || Commentary on the Root Verses on the Middle Way by Buddhapālita, Volume 3. It says: Birth, abiding, and destruction are both conditioned phenomena and will not lead to endlessness. How so? The birth of birth only produces the root birth, and the root birth also produces the birth of birth. Here, when any dharma, such as consciousness, arises, it has fifteen aspects: the dharma itself, the birth of the dharma, the abiding of the dharma, the destruction of the dharma, the association of the dharma, and the aging of the dharma. Here, if the dharma is white, then the dharma is the correct liberation; if the dharma is black, then the dharma is the wrong liberation.
