and cessation, desiring to be liberated from suffering, because abandonment and cessation are unreasonable. Therefore, it is not like that. If it were not emptiness, then abandoning afflictions and the cessation of the aggregates would also lead to the attainment of liberation from suffering. Here it is said: If all this were not empty, there would be no arising and no destruction. Who would desire to be liberated from suffering through abandonment and cessation? If all these beings were not empty, then there would be no arising and no destruction. Because those do not exist, who would desire to be liberated from suffering through abandonment and cessation? Because abandonment and cessation are unreasonable. Therefore, it should be understood that liberation from suffering is unreasonable in this order. So, what is it like? There is no abandonment, no attainment. There is no annihilation, no permanence. There is no cessation, no arising. That is what is called liberation from suffering. Therefore, the characteristic of liberation from suffering should be determined to be like that. Furthermore, liberation from suffering is not a thing. It would become the characteristic of aging and death. A thing without aging and death does not exist. In short, liberation from suffering is not a thing in any way. If it were to become a thing, it would become something with the characteristics of aging and death. Why? Because a thing without aging and death does not exist. Furthermore, if liberation from suffering were a thing, then liberation from suffering would become conditioned. Why? Because there is no thing that is not conditioned. Furthermore, if liberation from suffering were a thing, then how could it be said that liberation from suffering is not dependent? A thing that is not dependent does not exist. If it is thought that liberation from suffering is a thing, then liberation from suffering is not dependent. What is said is unreasonable. Why? Because there is no thing that is not dependent, therefore liberation from suffering is not a thing. Here it is said: Then, that liberation from suffering is not a thing. Here it is said: If from suffering

Nirvana is not truly existent, how can non-existence be established? If Nirvana is in no way truly existent, then it is also not non-existent, why? Because if true existence is thoroughly established, then non-existence is also thoroughly established. Furthermore, for whom is Nirvana truly existent, for them non-existence does not exist. For whom it is thought that Nirvana is truly existent, for them non-existence does not exist, like this, whatever is truly existent, it is not reasonable to call it non-existent, therefore Nirvana is also not non-existent. Furthermore, if Nirvana is not truly existent, how can it be said that Nirvana is not dependent? Whatever is not dependent, non-existence does not exist. If it is thought that Nirvana is not non-existent, then saying that Nirvana is not dependent is unreasonable, why? Because whatever non-existence is not dependent, nothing exists, therefore Nirvana is also not non-existent. Question: Then how should Nirvana be described? Answer: The phenomena of coming and going, whatever is dependent or taken as a cause, that is neither dependent nor a cause, it is shown to be Nirvana. Without mistaken understanding, the phenomena of coming and going, whatever the aggregates are dependent on or taken as a cause, that with non-mistaken understanding, is neither dependent nor a cause, the aggregates do not arise, this is shown to be Nirvana. Furthermore, the Blessed One taught to abandon arising and ceasing, therefore Nirvana, it is reasonable that it is neither truly existent nor non-existent. Here it is asked: Then Nirvana is both truly existent and non-existent. Here it is answered: If Nirvana is both truly existent and non-existent, true existence and non-existence, becoming liberation is unreasonable. If Nirvana is both truly existent and non-existent,

If so, then both things and non-things would become liberation, which is also unreasonable. Because two mutually contradictory things cannot exist at the same time. Furthermore, if nirvana is: both thing and non-thing, then nirvana is not without support, because it depends on both. If nirvana is both thing and non-thing, then nirvana will not be without support, because nirvana depends on both thing and non-thing. This is undesirable, therefore, it is unreasonable to say that nirvana is both thing and non-thing. Moreover, it is also unreasonable for this reason, if nirvana is: both thing and non-thing, then nirvana is unconditioned, while thing and non-thing are conditioned. Nirvana should not be both thing and non-thing. Why? Because nirvana is unconditioned, while thing and non-thing are conditioned. Therefore, due to this difference in cause, nirvana should also not be both thing and non-thing. Here it is said: Nirvana is neither thing nor non-thing, but that which possesses both is nirvana. Here it is said: If in nirvana, there are both thing and non-thing, these two should not exist in one place, like light and darkness. Nirvana should also not have both thing and non-thing. Why? Because two mutually contradictory things cannot exist simultaneously in the same place, just like light and darkness. Therefore, it is unreasonable to say that that which possesses both thing and non-thing is nirvana. Here it is said: Nirvana is neither thing nor non-thing. Here it is said: Not thing, not non-thing, who shows as nirvana? If thing and non-thing are established, then that is established. What you say, nirvana is neither thing nor non-thing.
