Commentary on the Root Verses on the Middle Way, "Fearless" By the noble Nāgārjuna. Commentary on the Root Verses on the Middle Way, "Fearless" By the noble Nāgārjuna. In Sanskrit: Mūlamadhyamikavṛtti Akutobhaya. In Tibetan: Commentary on the Root Verses on the Middle Way, "Fearless". Volume One. Homage to the Three Jewels! Homage to youthful Mañjuśrī! Homage to the teacher, the noble Nāgārjuna! He who has perfectly abandoned arising and ceasing through this principle, To the powerful one who taught dependent arising, To that sage, I pay homage! He who taught dependent arising, Unceasing, unborn, Uninterrupted, not permanent, Not coming, not going, Not different, not the same, Pacifying all elaborations, peaceful, To the supreme one among those who speak of perfect Buddhas, I pay homage! That which tames beings, whether they are lords, persons, both, time, nature, determination, essence, change, or those who have wrongly entered through the cause of atoms, those who are without cause, those with incompatible causes, those who are attached to views of annihilation and permanence, those whose sight of the Dharmakāya is obscured, those who are attached to the view of self, and for the sake of reversing these views, and for the sake of realizing the Dharmakāya, and for the sake of reversing the view of self, having made great efforts to purify them, those who possess great intelligence and have become vessels for the profound teachings, to them, I pay homage to the supreme one among those who speak of the perfect Buddhas, who taught the previously mentioned dependent arising, which is unceasing, unborn, uninterrupted, not permanent, not coming, not going, not different, not the same, pacifying all elaborations, and becoming peaceful. This is it. The praise of the Tathāgata, expressing the act of homage, endowed with close application, is the complete exposition of the ultimate truth. Therein, the term "unceasing" means that dependent arising has no cessation. Why? Because it is unborn. The term "unborn" means...

The reason is that there is no cessation. What is meant by 'no cessation' is the seed and the sprout. What is meant by 'no permanence' is like the duration of the seed and the sprout. What is meant by 'no coming and no going' is like the sky. What is meant by 'not different meanings' is like the fruit of the rice plant. What is meant by 'not the same meaning' is like the seed of the rice plant. For the remaining words, it should be explained by applying the words appropriately in the same way. Here it is asked: Why are these eight aspects mentioned? Here it is asked: Then why is the sound of 'no cessation' mentioned first? Here it is explained: Although generally speaking, the sound of arising should definitely be mentioned first, nevertheless, due to the arrangement of the verses, the repetition of the sound of 'no cessation' and the eight words such as 'no cessation' are mentioned. Here it is asked: Then why is the sound of 'no cessation' mentioned first? Here it is explained: Although generally speaking, the sound of arising should definitely be mentioned first, nevertheless, due to the arrangement of the verses, there is no contradiction in repeating the sound of 'no cessation' first. Or, it is to dispel the attachment of those who are attached to the name 'cessation' as a real entity. As it is said in the Bhagavati Prajnaparamita Sutra: Subhuti, what do you think? Will the mind that has ceased arise again? He replied: Bhagavan, it will not. The Buddha said: Subhuti, what do you think? Is the mind that has arisen subject to cessation? He replied: Bhagavan, it is not subject to cessation. The Buddha said: Subhuti, what do you think? Will that which is subject to cessation cease? He replied: Bhagavan, it will not. The Buddha said: Subhuti, what do you think? Is that which has not arisen subject to cessation? He replied: Bhagavan, it is not. The Buddha said: Subhuti, what do you think? Will that which is subject to cessation arise? He replied: Bhagavan, it will not. The Buddha said: Subhuti, what do you think? Will the mind that is subject to cessation cease? He replied: Bhagavan, it will not. The Buddha said: Subhuti, what do you think?
