No self can be established in any way. If that self does not exist, how can the existence or non-existence of afflictions be established? It cannot be established. Why? Because whose are those afflictions? That establishment also does not exist. If there is nothing, what exists? Afflictions do not exist at all. The self to whom those afflictions belong, that self cannot be established in any way. If no self exists, what afflictions exist? Because afflictions do not exist at all. If someone thinks that without any self, afflictions exist, then it should be said to them: Like looking at one's own body, afflictions, In the afflicted one, do not possess types. Like looking at one's own body, the afflicted one, In afflictions, does not possess five. Just as looking at one's own body, the aggregates do not possess five forms, so also afflictions do not possess five forms in the mind of the afflicted one. Just as looking at one's own body, the aggregates do not possess five forms, so also the mind of the afflicted one does not possess five forms in afflictions. Furthermore, Attractive and unattractive inversions, If not existing from their own nature. Attractive and unattractive inversions, Which afflictions are based on? When the inversions of attractive and unattractive are not from their own nature, then those inversions are not real. Whatever is not real is not from its own nature. If they are not from their own nature, then how can the afflictions that arise from relying on them exist? Here it is said: Form, sound, smell, taste, and touch, Odor and phenomena, these six, Are the basis of attachment, hatred, and Ignorance, thus distinguished. The six, form, sound, smell, taste, touch, and phenomena, are distinguished as the basis of attachment, hatred, and ignorance. Relying on that basis, the inversions of attractive and unattractive arise, and relying on the inversions of attractive and unattractive, attachment, hatred, and ignorance arise. Here it is said: Form, sound, smell, taste, and touch, odor and phenomena.

I, the only one. Like a city of Gandharvas, like a mirage, a dream. Like a magical being, like reflections, how could loveliness and unloveliness possibly arise in them? Forms, sounds, smells, tastes, touches, and dharmas are the only ones, separate, without anything unmixed, without inherent existence. Like a city of Gandharvas, like a mirage and a dream, like a magical being and reflections, how could loveliness and unloveliness possibly arise in them? Furthermore, upon what relying, is loveliness designated as unloveliness? Since it does not exist without relying on loveliness, therefore loveliness is not reasonable. Upon what relying, is that loveliness, which is designated as unloveliness, not existing prior without relying on loveliness, therefore loveliness is not reasonable. Upon what relying, is unloveliness designated as loveliness? Since it does not exist without relying on unloveliness, therefore unloveliness is not reasonable. Upon what relying, is that unloveliness, which is designated as loveliness, not existing prior without relying on unloveliness, therefore unloveliness is also not reasonable. If loveliness does not exist, how could desire possibly arise? If unloveliness does not exist, how could hatred possibly arise? If loveliness and unloveliness do not exist, how could desire and hatred possibly arise? Since they do not exist, ignorance also does not exist. Only through their non-existence, it is also established as non-existent. Here it is said, the reversed thoughts of loveliness and unloveliness are the only ones, because it is said in the Sutra Pitaka that there are four reversed thoughts such as permanence. Because they exist, those transformed into reversed thoughts also exist. Among them, that which grasps impermanence as permanence is a reversed thought, and that which grasps impermanence as impermanence is not a reversed thought, and so on for the rest. Here it is said, if it is said that grasping impermanence as permanence, such grasping is reversed, since permanence does not exist in emptiness, how is the grasping not reversed? If it is thought that grasping impermanence as permanence is a reversed thought, then it is said to that
