Bodies, etc., agents and results, etc., are like cities of gandharvas, like mirages and dreams. All dharmas should be viewed in this way. This is called "Examination of Actions and Results," the seventeenth chapter. Fifth fascicle. Here it is said: What, then, is the characteristic of Suchness? By what means can Suchness be realized? Here it is explained: Being free from self and what belongs to self is the characteristic of Suchness, and realizing it completely by first applying reasoning will lead to the realization of Suchness. If it is said, how is it clung to? If the aggregates are the self, then it will become something with arising and ceasing. If the aggregates are considered to be the self, then it would be subject to arising and ceasing, because the aggregates are subject to arising and ceasing. If the self is subject to arising and ceasing, then all the faults of impermanence would become excessive, but since that is abandoning the rest, it is not mentioned. If it is other than the aggregates, then it would become without the characteristics of the aggregates. If the self is other than the aggregates, then it would become non-aggregate-like, because what is other than the aggregates is permanent. If the self is not the characteristic of the aggregates, then all the faults of permanence would become excessive, but that too is not mentioned because the rest is abandoned. Therefore, because when fully examined, neither the self nor the two are reasonable. If the self does not exist, how can what belongs to the self exist? If examined, since the self is unreasonable in every way, how can what belongs to the self exist? Just as what is to be done by the self is called "mine," if that self does not exist, then saying "this is mine" is unreasonable. Therefore, the absence of self and what belongs to self is the characteristic of Suchness. Because self and what belongs to self are pacified, the clinging to "I" and the pride of "I" will disappear. Thus, because the manifest clinging to self and what belongs to self is close to pacification, the clinging to "I" and the pride of "I" will disappear, just as clinging to self leads to clinging to "I," and clinging to what belongs to self leads to pride in "I." Therefore, because clinging to self is close to pacification, therefore

Ego-grasping will disappear, and attachment to what appears as mine will be pacified, therefore ego-grasping will disappear. Here it is said: Whoever sees it as it is in this way, ego-grasping and grasping at what is mine will disappear. The reason for saying this is that because there is self, there is also what is mine. Here it is said: Whatever ego-grasping and grasping at what is mine there is, That also is not existent. Without ego-grasping and grasping at what is mine, Whoever sees it, that one also does not see. Thus, whatever is said to be without ego-grasping and grasping at what is mine, that also does not exist. Whoever sees without ego-grasping and grasping at what is mine, because of wrong views, the eye of wisdom is impaired, and that person does not see it as it is. When self and what is mine are exhausted, In all internal and external things, Then grasping will cease, And when that is exhausted, birth is exhausted. Thus, if attachment to self in oneself and attachment to what is mine in external things are exhausted, then the four types of grasping will cease, and when these cease, existence (srid pa) will be exhausted, and when existence is exhausted, birth will also be exhausted. This is the result of realizing the selflessness of persons, having abandoned the obscurations of afflictions, completely separated, it is nirvana with remainder. Now, in order to explain the method of attaining the result of realizing the selflessness of phenomena, having abandoned the obscurations of knowledge, completely separated, it is nirvana without remainder, it is said: Liberation comes from the exhaustion of karma and afflictions, karma and afflictions arise from conceptualization, Those arise from elaboration, and elaboration is stopped by emptiness. Here, karma and afflictions are the cause of birth, therefore, when these are exhausted, liberation from suffering is liberation. This shows entering the realm of nirvana with remainder. Karma and afflictions arise from conceptualization, because if these exist, they arise. Conceptualization arises from elaboration, because it arises from the elaboration of the characteristics of attachment to the appearance of conventional truth. Elaboration is stopped by emptiness, because it is stopped by realizing the nature of the selflessness of phenomena. This is nirvana without remainder.
