If there is bondage beforehand, then it depends on that bondage, for what reason is it completely examined? That bondage is also non-existent beforehand, therefore, taking up bondage is unreasonable. The remainder is shown by gone, not gone, and going, just as in gone, not gone, and going, etc., there is no going and the making of going, etc., for those who are bound, not bound, and being bound, there is also no binding and the making of binding, etc. Here it is said: Liberation exists. Here it is said: For a while, the bound will not be liberated, nor will the unbound be liberated. For a while, the bound will not be liberated, why? Because of being bound. The unbound will also not be liberated, why? Because there is no bondage. To this, if it is thought that if the bound will be liberated, what fault will there be? To this it should be said: If the bound is being liberated, then bondage and liberation will occur at the same time. If the bound is being liberated, then bondage and liberation will occur at the same time, which is not desired, because bondage and liberation are incompatible, like light and darkness. Here it is said: Liberation exists, for those who fear samsara, when will I be completely liberated from samsara without attachment? When will I possess complete liberation? Because there is such a thought. Here it is said: I am without taking, Nirvana. May Nirvana become mine. Those who hold on to them, their clinging is not well grasped. When will those people be completely liberated from samsara without attachment? When will they possess complete liberation? It should be known that the clinging to self and self-possession of those who hold on to them is not well grasped. Here it is said: For a while, samsara and nirvana exist. Those are only for some, not for nothing, therefore the samsaric and the nirvanic also exist. Here it is said: For whom there is no arising of Nirvana, nor is there cessation of Samsara, for whom what is Samsara, and how to seek Nirvana? For whom ultimate Nirvana

Since arising does not exist, and cutting off samsara also does not exist, then one should examine what samsara is, and also examine what nirvana is. If these do not exist, then the one who transmigrates and the one who attains nirvana also do not exist, like the sky. This is called examining bondage and liberation, the sixteenth chapter. Here it is said: All things are teachers, because karma and its results are separately established. What is karma? Oneself being well-disciplined, and benefiting others, whatever loving-kindness there is, these dharmas, in this life and the next, are the seeds of fruits. Oneself being well-disciplined means that oneself must definitely guard. Benefiting others means benefiting other beings. Loving-kindness means having loving-kindness, wanting to benefit all sentient beings. It should be determined that whatever the mind of these is, that is dharma. These are the seeds of fruits in this world and others. What are they? It is said: The supreme sage said that karma is mind and thought. The distinctions of those karmas are fully proclaimed in various ways. The detailed explanation of the distinctions of those karmas has been stated in the Abhidharma, so it is not mentioned here in order to clarify the rest. Among them, whatever is said to be 'karma is mind' is considered mental karma. Whatever is said to be 'is thought' is physical and verbal karma. The explanation of these is like this, if briefly, what is the nature like? It is said: Speech and movement and non-revealing form of non-abandonment, whatever is the non-revealing form of abandonment, others are also considered the same. The merit and non-merit arising from enjoyment, and the way of those four, and the mind and those seven dharmas, are considered manifest karma. Speech means the four karmas of speech. Movement means the three actions of the body. Non-revealing form of non-abandonment means from the beginning of completely taking up non-virtue, not abandoning other newly arising physical and verbal karmas. Non-revealing form means without movement.
