If the root arising produces, your root has not produced it, how does it produce? If the arising of your arising produces the root arising, how does the arising of the arising that your root arising has not produced produce that root arising? Because it has not arisen itself. If you think that the root arising only produces the root arising by the arising of the arising that has produced, and not by the one that has not produced, then it should be explained: If your root, after producing the root by that which has produced, how does that root which has not produced produce it? If the arising of your root produces the root arising by the arising of the arising that has produced, then how does the arising of the arising produce that root arising that has not produced? Because it has not arisen itself. Therefore, it cannot be established by that investigation either, so there is no self-established nature. Here it is said: The root arising itself is arising, so it produces the arising of arising, but not by not arising. Here it is said: Your that is just like that, if that which has not arisen can produce, then that production depends on intention. Your root arising is arising, if that which has not arisen itself can produce the other arising of arising, then that arising of arising depends on intention, but it cannot, therefore, your root arising, that which is arising and has not arisen itself, cannot produce the other arising of arising. Or this is like permanence, your arising of arising, that which is arising and has not arisen itself, if it can produce the other root arising, then that root arising depends on intention, but it cannot, therefore, your arising of arising, that which is arising and has not arisen itself, cannot produce the other root arising. Why is it that arising is not arising itself? Because arising is not yet fully established. Therefore, it is unreasonable to say that that which is arising produces it, like what is destroyed and what is not destroyed.

No. Here it is said: Like a lamp, self and other, illuminates that, likewise, birth also produces both self and other things. Just as a lamp illuminates both its own and other things, so birth also produces both its own and other things. Here it is said: The lamp and wherever it is, there is no darkness where it resides. What does the lamp illuminate? It illuminates by dispelling darkness. Here, the lamp itself has no darkness, and wherever the lamp resides, there is no darkness. When the lamp itself has no darkness, and wherever the lamp resides, there is no darkness, what does the lamp illuminate, its own or other things? If it is said that it illuminates by dispelling darkness, then because the lamp does not act on its own and other things by dispelling darkness, the lamp does not illuminate its own things, nor does it illuminate other things, like a cat and a mouse. Here it is said: Because the lamp dispels darkness as it arises, therefore, there is no darkness where the lamp is and wherever the lamp resides. Here it is said: How does the lamp dispel darkness as it arises? When the lamp is arising, it does not encounter darkness. Just as the lamp dispels darkness as it arises, it is because it does not encounter darkness when the lamp is arising. Furthermore, even if the lamp does not encounter darkness, if it dispels darkness, then the darkness that dwells in all the worlds will be dispelled by the lamp residing here. If one thinks that the lamp dispels darkness even without encountering it, then it should be said that if the lamp dispels darkness even without encountering it, then the darkness that dwells in all the worlds would also be dispelled by the lamp residing here. If there is no encounter, then what is the difference between the lamp dispelling the darkness residing here as it arises and not dispelling the darkness residing in all the worlds? Therefore, the lamp does not dispel darkness because it does not encounter darkness as it arises. Furthermore, the lamp, its own and other things,

If it can make appear, darkness also obscures self and other things without doubt. If you think that a lamp makes self and other things appear, then darkness, which is the opposite of the lamp, will undoubtedly obscure self and other things. If darkness obscures its own things, then darkness will not be visible, and things will always appear, which is undesirable. If darkness, which is the opposite of the lamp, does not obscure self and other things, then, friend, the lamp makes both self and other things appear. What is said is not right, so for now, an exception is made. Regarding this meaning, your example of the lamp, birth can produce self and other things. What needs to be said about this is: If this birth is unborn, how does it produce its own nature? If it is born and can produce, what is there to produce once it is born? If this birth can produce its own nature, is it producing something that is born or unborn? For the moment, if the unborn cannot produce its own nature, because the unborn is nothingness, how can nothingness produce its own nature? If you think that the born can produce, that is also not right, because when it is born, it is already born, so what is there to produce for something that is already born? There is nothing to produce for something that is already born, and there is nothing to do for something that is already done. Thus, does this birth produce its own nature with the born, or does it produce with the unborn? In either case, it cannot produce, therefore birth cannot produce its own nature, so it is unreasonable to say that birth can produce its own things. The same applies to abiding and ceasing. Furthermore, the born, the unborn, and the being born, do not produce in any way. With the gone and the not-gone step, these have been explained separately. If birth can produce other things, is it producing something that is born, unborn, or being born? There are three types of examination.
