This is not caused by conditions, nor is it born from non-conditions. Therefore, there is no agent. If there is no action and no agent, how can there be a fruit born from action? If there is no fruit, how can there be an eater? Just as the Buddha emanates, he emanates with the perfection of magical powers. The emanation of that emanation is like the emanation of another. Likewise, whatever is done by that agent, what is done is also like the form of an emanation. For example, an emanation creates another emanation. The act of emanation is also like that. Afflictions, actions, and bodies, agents and fruits, are like a city of Gandharvas, like mirages and dreams. This is called the examination of action, which is the seventeenth chapter. If the aggregates are the self, then it becomes a law of arising and ceasing. If it is different from the aggregates, then it becomes without the characteristics of the aggregates. If self-nature is not existent, how can there be what belongs to the self? For the sake of pacifying the self and what belongs to the self, the clinging to self and the clinging to what belongs to self also cease. That which is without clinging to self and clinging to what belongs to self is also non-existent. Without clinging to self and clinging to what belongs to self, by what seeing is it not seen? When the thought of self and what belongs to self is exhausted in all that is internal and external, then near-taking ceases, and because that ceases, birth ceases. Liberation comes from the exhaustion of actions and afflictions. Actions and afflictions arise from conceptualization. Those elaborations arise from elaboration and cease through emptiness. It is called self, and it is also a provisional designation. It is taught as non-self, and it is also an exposition. The Buddhas also teach that both self and non-self are non-existent. The words spoken are inverted, because the sphere of activity of the mind is inverted. Unborn and unceasing, the nature of phenomena is equal to nirvana. All is real and unreal, the nature of real and unreal, unreal and not unreal. This is what the Buddha taught accordingly. Not known from others, peaceful, not elaborated by elaborations, without conceptual thought, meaning without difference, this is the nature of Suchness. Whatever arises dependent on something, that is temporarily not that itself. Since it is also not different from that, therefore it is neither discontinuous nor permanent. The teaching of the Buddhas, the protectors of the world, which has become nectar, is neither one meaning nor different, discontinuous.

Neither existent nor impermanent, the perfect Buddhas have not arisen, the Hearers have all passed away, yet the wisdom of the solitary Buddhas arises greatly without a teacher. "The Examination of Self and Dharma" is called the Eighteenth Chapter. If the present and the future depend on the past, then the present and the future should exist in the past. If the present and the future do not exist in that time, how can the present and the future depend on that time? Without depending on the past, these two cannot be established. Therefore, the present and the future do not exist. By this order of reasoning, the other two should also be inferred, the differences between superior, inferior, and middling, and one and many should also be known. The non-abiding time does not grasp, what is the time to be grasped? Since abiding is not real, how can the ungrasped time be established? If it is said that time depends on things, where is time when there are no things? If it is said that all things are non-existent, how can time exist? "The Examination of Time" is called the Nineteenth Chapter. If it is said that the nature of the fruit arises from the collection of causes and conditions, if the fruit already exists in the collection, how can it arise from the collection? If it is said that the nature of the fruit arises from the collection of causes and conditions, if there is no fruit in the collection, how can it arise from the collection? If it is said that the fruit already exists in the collection of causes and conditions, if the collection has the nature of being grasped, then the collection itself cannot be grasped. If it is said that there is no fruit in the collection of causes and conditions, then the causes and conditions should be equal to non-causes and non-conditions. If it is said that the cause gives its causal nature to the fruit and then ceases, then the cause that gives and the cause that ceases become two entities. If it is said that the cause does not give its causal nature to the fruit and then ceases, then the fruits that arise after the cause has ceased become causeless. If it is said that the fruit arises simultaneously with the collection, then the producer and the produced become simultaneous, which is a fault. If it is said that the fruit arises before the collection, then the
