The Treatise on the Middle Way, Root Verses, Called "Wisdom", by the noble Nāgārjuna. The Treatise on the Middle Way, Root Verses, Called "Wisdom". By the noble Nāgārjuna. In Sanskrit: Prajñā-nāma-mūla-madhyamaka-kārikā. In Tibetan: དབུ་མ་རྩ་བའི་ཚིག་ལེའུར་བྱས་པ་ཤེས་རབ་ཅེས་བྱ་བ། (dBu ma rtsa ba'i tshig le'ur byas pa shes rab ces bya ba, The Root Verses on the Middle Way, Called "Wisdom"). Homage to youthful Mañjuśrī! Whatever arises dependently Is without cessation, unborn, Unannihilated, not permanent, Not coming, not going, Without distinction, without identity, And free from conceptual constructs— To that teaching of peace I bow, The best of speakers, the Buddha. Not from itself, not from another, Not from both, not without a cause, Nowhere are things produced. Therefore, they never come into being. There are four conditions: cause, Object, immediate condition, And also dominant condition. There is no fifth condition. The inherent nature of things Is not in the conditions and so forth. If the inherent nature of a thing does not exist, Then the inherent nature of another does not exist. Action is that which is connected with conditions. There is no action that is not connected with conditions. There is no condition without action. But if there is action connected with conditions, Then, since it arises in dependence on these, Therefore, these are known as conditions. As long as it does not arise, how can these be conditions? It is not reasonable. Even in the case of what is nonexistent or existent, it is not reasonable to have a condition. If it is nonexistent, what will it be a condition for? If it is existent, what will the condition do? When things are existent, Nonexistent, or both nonexistent and existent, how can there be a cause that establishes them? If that is the case, it is not reasonable. The object of an existent thing Is shown to be only nonexistent. If a thing has no object, how can there be an object? If things are not produced, then cessation is not reasonable. Therefore, an immediate condition is not reasonable. If it has ceased, what will be the condition? For those things that have no inherent nature, why is there existence if it is nonexistent? It is not reasonable to say, "Because this exists, this arises." When the conditions are assembled separately, there is no result. That which is not in the conditions, how can it arise from the conditions? If it arises from those conditions even though it is nonexistent, why does it not arise from what is not a condition?

Of change. If the result is the nature of the cause, The causes are not my nature. From what is not my substance, what result is there? How is that the nature of the cause? Therefore, it is not the nature of the cause. The result that is not the nature of the cause, Is non-existent, because there is no result, How can what is not a cause become a cause? This is called the examination of causes, Which is the first chapter. In short, what has gone does not go, Nor does what has not gone go. Apart from what has gone and what has not gone, Walking cannot be understood. Where there is movement, there is going, And that is in whose walking? Movement is neither gone nor not gone, Therefore, there is going in walking. How can it be reasonable That there is going in walking? When there is no going, Walking is not reasonable. In whose walking there is going, In that walking there is no going, It would be a fault, why? Because there is going in walking. If there is going in walking, Then there would be a fault of two goings, By whom that walking changes, And what is the going in that? If there is a fault of two goings, Then the goer would also become two. Why? Without a goer, Going is not reasonable. If there is no goer, Going is not reasonable, If there is no going, then the goer, How can it become existent? In short, the goer does not go, What is not a goer is not going. Other than the goer and the non-goer, Who is the third one who can go? When there is no going, The goer is not reasonable, In short, the goer goes, How can it be reasonable? In whose direction there is a goer, In that going there is no going, It would be a fault of being a goer, Because the goer wants to go. If the goer goes, Then there would be a fault of two goings, By whom the goer appears, And who goes after becoming a goer. There is no beginning of going in what has gone, Nor is there a beginning of going in what has not gone. If there is no beginning in walking, Where does going begin? Before the beginning of going, Where can going begin? There is no walking and no going, Where is going in what has not gone? In all beginnings of going, If it is the nature of non-appearance, What is gone and what is walking?
